Andris Vaņins (* 30th April 1980 in Ilūkste ) is a Latvian football - goalkeeper ; he plays for FC Zurich and the Latvian national soccer team .

Career

Vaņins began his career at FK Ventspils , for which he first appeared in 1998 in the Virslīga . In 2003 he moved to the Russian club FK Moscow , where he was not used. After an interlude at FK Venta in Kuldīga , he returned to Ventspils in 2006. In June 2009 Vaņins signed a three-year contract with FC Sion from the Swiss Super League . In December 2010 he extended his contract with FC Sion until the end of June 2015. In the 2010/11 and 2014/15 seasons he won the Swiss Cup with the Valais . On June 17, 2016, he signed a three-year contract with the relegated FC Zurich . With the FCZ he returned to the top division as champion of the 2016/17 season . Vaņins then served as captain at FC Zurich until Yanick Brecher was ousted as the goalkeeper. At the beginning of 2019 he extended his contract for one season until summer 2020.

His debut in the national team was Vaņins on February 4, 2000 in a game against Slovakia . On October 10, 2019, he played his 100th international match in a 3-0 home defeat against Poland in qualifying for the Euro 2020 .

With the FK Ventspils Vaņins was in the years 2006 to 2008 Latvian football champions. In 2006 he was voted the best goalkeeper of the Virslīga. In 2008, 2013, 2015, 2016 and 2017 he was named Footballer of the Year in Latvia . In the Super League of Switzerland, Vaņins was named best goalkeeper and best player at FC Sion in his first season.
