Thomas Häberli (born April 11, 1974 in Lucerne ) is a Swiss football coach and former professional footballer , who last played for BSC Young Boys . He has been a trainer since 2009 .

Career as a player

society

At 20 he terminated his contract with Lausanne , a supposed disc herniation had been diagnosed and Häberli only played in the first division . Six years later and relieved of his back pain, he found pleasure in life as a professional again. He called SC Kriens independently and asked for a trial training session and finally got a contract. After a detour at FC Basel (during Schützenmatt's time), he signed with the Young Boys in Bern and became a crowd favorite there. In the transfer madness of his club, "Häbi" remained one of the few remaining from the Neufeld era of the Bern club. Most recently he was the longest-serving player in the Axpo Super League . In the 2007/08 season , Häberli scored 18 goals, making him the second best goalscorer in the league. He was only surpassed by teammate Hakan Yakin .

As the only YB player so far in the club's 110-year history, Thomas Häberli received a farewell game after having been through everything with the club from almost relegation to the first division (third highest division) to Swiss runner-up in nine years.

National team

In 2004 he played his first and only international match for the national team against the team from the Faroe Islands . For the EM 2008 , some media and fans called for Häberli to be included in the national team, as the striker shot his way to second place in the Super League's top scorers in the autumn of his career . Since Blaise Nkufo injured himself while preparing for the EURO, national coach Köbi Kuhn decided to include Häberli in the provisional EM squad. On May 27, 2008, in the (unofficial) test match against the U21s of FC Lugano , Thomas Häberli scored a goal for the national team. However, Köbi Kuhn announced the next day that Häberli would not be allowed to take part in Euro 2008.

Häberli anniversary

In favor of the 110th birthday of the Bernese Young Boys, the Swiss rock band Züri West played under the pseudonym "The Häberlis". So they honored Thomas Häberli, number 15 at YB, for his long-term loyalty to YB, according to YB fan and band leader Kuno Lauener .

Career as a coach

His first position as a coach (2009/2010 season) was the 3rd division team FC Perlen-Buchrain from the canton of Lucerne . With this team he reached promotion to the 2nd division. In the 2010/2011 season he took over the training function of the U-18 junior team of the BSC Young Boys. On July 1, 2013, he took over the U-21 team at FC Basel as the successor to Carlos Bernegger . In the winter break of 2019, Häberli and FC Basel parted ways. A little later he signed as the new head coach of FC Luzern until the end of the 2019 season.

Personal

He has two daughters and a son with his wife and lives with them in Ballwil next to his parents' farm in a single-family house.
