Ballwil ( Swiss German Baubu [ ˈbɑʊbʊ ]), until 1814 Mettenwil, is a municipality in the Swiss canton of Lucerne . It belongs to the constituency of Hochdorf .

The community is located on the western slope of the Lindenberg , leaning towards the Reuss valley , and forms the entrance to the Lucerne Seetal . The community includes the village, numerous hamlets, groups of houses and individual farms. The largest districts after the village (with different quarters) are Gibelflüh ( 499  m above sea level ; 2.5 km east of the village), Gerligen ( 476  m above sea level ; 1.1 km southeast), Wald ( 475  m above sea level ) above sea level ; 2.5 km southeast) and knowledge trails ( 500  m above sea level ; 2.1 km east). There are few forest areas in the community (Gerligenwald, Fäjerenwald, Gorgenwald and parts of the Eibeler and Hiltig forests). The Hiltigbach ( called Gerligenbach in Ballwil ), which flows through Ballwil coming from Oberebersol (Hohenrain), flows into the Reuss at St. Kathrinen (Inwil). The Hiltigbach takes on some tributaries on its (short) run (the Moosbach on Ballwiler Boden ). There is a small pond near the Sagi district. An even bigger one, the Gütschweiher, is west of the village. To the north of this there was once another pond, the Weiherhausweiher .

The municipal ban of Ballwil measures 876 hectares; these are divided into built-up areas (buildings, streets, squares) with 51 ha (5.8%), meadow and arable land with 729 ha (83.2%), forest with 80.6 ha (9.2%) and the rest of the area (bodies of water, gravel mining area) with 15.4 ha (1.8%).

Neighboring communities are clockwise from the north: Hohenrain , Sins in the canton of Aargau, Inwil , Eschenbach and Hochdorf .

In the second half of the 19th century, the population fell massively as a result of emigration (1850–1888: −23.3%). Since then it has risen continuously. From 1888 to 1970 the growth was steady but small (1888–1970: +557 people or +72.3%). Since then, there has been a sustained and strong increase (1970–2010: +1197 people or +90.2%). This is not least due to the proximity to the cities of Lucerne and Zug .

The population speaks a highly Alemannic dialect as everyday language. In the last census in 2000, 95.64% said German, 1.04% Albanian and 0.90% Serbo-Croatian as their main language.

history

As found at the Höchweid farmstead (southeast of the village; remains of a Roman settlement) and in 1978 at the Bälletz farmstead (northeast of Eschenbach; Roman bricks), parts of the community were settled early on.

Germanic names give an indication of Alemannic settlement. For the first time under its current name, in the form of Paldiwilare, the place is mentioned in 924 under the property of the Fraumünster Abbey of Zurich; the name means "at Baldo's homestead, Paldo". In 1210 a noble servant named Hartmann von Ballwil (Baldewile) is mentioned. This family built a castle and initially worked as local administrators for the Counts of Kyburg and after their extinction for the Habsburgs . A Bruno von Ballwil was killed on the Austrian side in the battle of Morgarten in 1315 . The family died out in 1381.

Parts of the community were in the Habsburg office of Richensee, others in the Habsburg office of Rothenburg. Between 1385 and 1413, all districts came under the rule of the city of Lucerne and from then on belonged to their ruling bailiffs in Rothenburg. In 1798 Mettenwil, as the municipality was called at that time, was assigned to the newly created district and in 1803 to the Hochdorf office .

In 2006 a mammoth tooth that is around 45,000 years old was found in Ballwil. Four years later, quartz was found in the Schönfeld district (Oberdorf). This was followed by a brief discussion about commercial quartz mining. However, this was rejected by the municipality in a vote in 2012 due to the settlement aspect.

Attractions

The Gütschweiher is a small nature reserve and is under the protection of the community. It is interesting both because of its vegetation and because of the native fauna. The abundance of insects is very diverse.
