Altwis (in local dialect [ ɑltˈʋis ]) is a municipality in the Hochdorf constituency in the canton of Lucerne in Switzerland .
geography
The community is located between Lake Baldegger and Lake Hallwil in the Lucerne part of the Seetal . The municipality covers 293 ha, of which 3 ha are lake area. 63.8% of the land area is used for agriculture; 29.0% are forest and wood and 7.2% are settlement areas.
Neighboring communities of Altwis are the Lucerne communities of Aesch in the north, Ermensee in the south-west and west and Hitzkirch in the west and east.

languages
Colloquial language is a highly Alemannic dialect. In the 2000 census, 89.83% said German, 8.19% Albanian and 2.35% Serbo-Croatian as their main language.
Religions - denominations
The population is traditionally Roman Catholic. At the last census in 2000, 75.14% were Roman Catholic Christians. In addition, 9.32% Muslims, 6.50% Evangelical Reformed Christians and 4.52% non-denominational people were counted.
Origin - nationality
At the end of 2015, 363 of the 416 inhabitants were Swiss and 53 foreigners. The population consisted of 88.26% Swiss citizens. At the end of 2015, the foreign residents came from Macedonia (18 people; 4.33%), Germany (11 people; 2.64%), Austria, Romania and Sri Lanka (4 people each; 0.96%), Eritrea and Slovakia ( 3 people each; 0.72%) and other European countries (6 people; 1.44%).
Population development
The population rose from 330 to 417 from 1798 to 1837 and reached its peak of 422 in 1870. After that, it fell massively until 1920. Between 1920 and 1950 it increased again, and then again to the low of 1970 295 residents to sink. The last growth phase lasted from 1970 to 2012 (1970–2012: +39.32%).

history
The area was populated early on. This is indicated by a 50 × 20 m large refuge in the Ebnet forest above Altwis, which presumably dates from the Migration Period. The place was mentioned indirectly for the first time in 1113, when a deed of donation from the St. Blasien monastery in the Black Forest named a Bernhard von Altwis . The Altwise farm was first mentioned directly in 1150 . In 1173 the Counts of Kyburg took over the rule, in 1264 the Habsburgs . The Lords of Heidegg administered the community as part of the Richensee office. From 1415 to 1803 the community belonged to the free offices . Then she came to Lucerne and the newly formed Hochdorf Office.

In the 2015 Swiss parliamentary elections, the proportion of voters in Altwis was: SVP 32.4%, CVP 29.7%, FDP 12.0%, SP 9.8%, GPS 8.0%, glp 5.0%, BDP 1, 7%.
economy
Altwis is traditionally a farming village. In addition to the usual agricultural products, wine was also grown until 1900. Of the (as of 2000) 211 people in employment, however, half work abroad - mostly in other municipalities in the region. Of 174 people in employment in the village, 70.1% work in agriculture, a mere 9.2% in industry and trade and 20.7% in service occupations (as of 2001). There are 45 farms.

Altwis is on the road from Hochdorf to Wohlen in the canton of Aargau . The community is accessible by public transport by bus from Hitzkirch to Schongau LU . The Lucerne - Lenzburg railway line passes west of the municipality. The closest stop is Ermensee. The nearest motorway connections are far away; ( Sursee 19 km, Lenzburg in the canton of Aargau even 23 km).
schools
The school comprises an entry level (kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade) and the entire spectrum of the primary level, after the communities Altwis and Mosen had to give up their cooperation in the primary level school after the merger of Mosen with Hitzkirch. From the 7th grade onwards, the children attend classes in Hitzkirch and Hochdorf.
