Finds from the Neolithic Age and from Celtic and Roman graves prove the long history of settlement. Officially mentioned for the first time, under the Latin name Aske inferior , the place was given in 853 by Ludwig the German. In a further deed of donation, a German-speaking place term ( Aschab ) appears for the first time in 1101 , and the name Esche in 1150 . From the southern German barons of Krenkingen, the rule first went to the Counts of Kyburg and then to the Johanniterkommende Hohenrain . In 1415 the entire Richensee office came to Lucerne, but from 1425 to 1803 it belonged to the Free Offices. The Reformation was introduced in 1528 . As early as 1532, however, the community was re-Catholicized. All Protestant residents who did not want to renounce the Reformation were "washed up" (drowned) in the Reuss in Lucerne. The municipality has belonged to the canton of Lucerne since 1803 and was assigned to the Hochdorf office.

The Catholic orientation is reflected in the sights. In addition to chapels and crossroads, the village church of St. Luzia , built by M. Elgus in 1791/1792, deserves special mention. This was built in the classical style with Rococo decorations. In 1908 a church tower was added. The interior was renovated in 1935, followed by an overall restoration in 1980. In 2003 a gentle interior and exterior renovation was carried out.
