Züri West is one of the most successful Swiss rock bands from Bern . The name Züri West is intended as an (ironic) paraphrase for Bern - the federal city that lies west of the largest Swiss city, Zurich - and is viewed by the people of Zurich as a distant western suburb. The lyrics of the songs are mainly sung in Bern German .
Band history
Kuno Lauener , Sam Mumenthaler, Küse Fehlmann and Peter Schmid appeared together for the first time in 1984 as Sweet Home Pajamas and a few weeks later as Gianni Pannini . On February 9, 1984 they founded the band Züri West together with Peter von Siebenthal . In 1985 the band released a concert recording on the maxi single Splendid . With songs like Flachgleit and Hansdampf , the band provided the soundtrack to the youth riots around the Zaffaraya area and the cultural-political fight for the Reithalle cultural center in Bern. In 1987 the first album Sport & Musik was released .
With their second album Bümpliz – Casablanca (1989), the band made it to number one on the Swiss charts . The album Elvis (1990) was awarded a gold record for 25,000 copies sold. In 1991 the album Arturo Bandini was released and was also successful. With the live album Winter Tour, the band looked back at their development from a political scene band to a national pop great.
Gert Stäuble replaced Silvio Silfverberg on drums during the break that followed. The song I schänke dr mis Härz from the studio album Züri West (1994) became the band's biggest hit to date; on the album is I ha di gärn gha a Swiss German version of When You Were Mine from the album Dirty Mind by Prince available. With the album Hoover Jam (1996) produced in the United States, the band tried to distance themselves from the image of the hit band. After a three-year hiatus, the album Super 8 (1999) was released.
In the following two years guitarist Peter von Siebenthal and bassist Martin Gerber left the band. They were replaced by Tom Etter (guitar), Jürg Schmidhauser (bass) and Oli Kuster (keys). In the title song of the album Radio zum Glück (2001), the band criticized the music program of Radio DRS 3 . The film “Züri West - am Blues vorus…”, which came out in cinemas in 2002, dealt with the development of Radio zum Glück .
With the sampler returns Züri West celebrated the beginning of 2004 its twentieth anniversary. In June 2004 the commercially successful studio album Aloha from Züri West was released .
The studio album Haubi Songs was released on January 12, 2008. On March 14, 2009, Züri West played for the 110th birthday of the BSC Young Boys football club under the pseudonym the Häberlis (inspired by legendary striker Thomas Häberli ) in front of over 25,000 spectators at the Stade de Suisse in Bern.
The album HomeRekords was released on April 23, 2010. It is mainly about B-sides and demos of well-known songs.
The single Göteborg was released in January 2012, the album of the same name on March 23, 2012. In April 2012 the album reached number 1 in the Swiss charts.
On March 24, 2017, Züri West returned after five years (apart from the soundtrack singles Lied for Lotti and Goalie ) with the album LOVE . It is the first publication with the new members Manuel Haefliger and Wolfgang Zwieauer. In the run-up to the album, videos were released for the songs Schatteboxe and Schachtar gäge Gent , and the film was shot in western Bern at the Tscharnergut and Holenacker tram stops. Schachtar gäge Gent was released as a single.
