Carlos Bernegger (born March 9, 1969 in Bell Ville , Argentina ) is an Argentine - Swiss football coach and former football player .

Athletic career

Bernegger, whose full name is actually Juan-Carlos Bernegger , was born in the small Argentine town of Bell Ville in the heart of Argentina. There he began his football career before moving to Switzerland to FC Winterthur in the early 1990s . There he injured his cruciate ligament, meniscus and external ligament in the fifth game against FC Wettingen and subsequently failed to make the comeback.

As a coach, he then gained his first experience as a coach in Winterthur, in 1995/96 he briefly coached the first team - only to then train the club's U18s again. In 1999, because of love, he moved back to Argentina for a year and coached the Bell Ville football club there. There he, nicknamed "El alemán", was unable to gain a foothold due to his strict training style and in 2000 he moved to the Grasshopper Club Zurich as a youth coordinator. In the following years he was assistant trainer in 2003 and interim trainer several times (2003, 2004, 2007). He was also the coach of the second teams from 2005 to 2008.

In 2008, Bernegger moved to FC Basel , for which he also worked as a youth coordinator. From October 2011 to April 2013 he was the coach of the U-21 department.

In April 2013, Bernegger made his debut as head coach in the highest Swiss league with FC Luzern . On October 6, 2014, the club separated from Bernegger. From March to the end of August 2017 he trained the Grasshopper Club Zurich . After five games and only one win at the beginning of the 2017/18 season, he was released. Bernegger has been assistant coach at FC Basel since August 2018.
