Swiss Cup 2016/17

The 93rd Swiss Cup ( Helvetia Swiss Cup) was held in 2017 and 2018. It was won by FC Zurich .

mode

Six rounds (1/32, 1/16, 1/8, 1/4 and 1/2 final, final) were played.

Ten clubs from the Super League and nine teams from the Challenge League qualified directly for the Swiss Cup. In addition, 22 clubs from the first division (9 clubs from the Promotion League and 9 clubs from the 1st league ), 14 clubs from the 2nd interregional league and 12 clubs from the amateur leagues qualified in pre-qualifications and regional eliminations. In addition, the winner of the fair play trophy qualified.

Although FC Vaduz played in the Challenge League League, it took part in the Liechtenstein Cup and was therefore not eligible to play in the Swiss Cup. In addition, the U-21 teams from the Promotion League were not eligible to play, as were all other reserve teams. If a reserve team had won a regional elimination, the first team would be awarded the starting place in the Swiss Cup, unless the first team had already qualified for the competition. Then the final opponent of the regional elimination would get the starting place.

The Swiss Cup was played in the knockout system .

  • 1st round (12th and 13th August 2017): 64 teams, the winners are qualified for the 1/16 finals.
  • 2nd round (15 to 17 September 2017): 32 teams, the winners are qualified for the round of 16.
  • Round of 16 (October 25 and 26, 2017): 16 teams, the winners qualify for the quarter-finals.
  • Quarter-finals (November 29th and 30th, 2017): 8 teams, the winners qualify for the semi-finals.
  • Semi-finals (February 28th and March 1st): 4 teams, the winners qualify for the final.
  • Final (May 27, 2018 in Bern): The winner wins the 93rd Swiss Cup.

The cup winner received the right to start in the group stage of the 2018/19 UEFA Europa League . If the cup winner has already qualified for the UEFA Champions League or its qualifying rounds via the Super League , the third in the Super League final table moves from the qualification to the group phase and the fifth receives the free place in the qualification as an additional participant.
