Marco Stefan Wölfli (born August 22, 1982 in Solothurn ) is a Swiss football goalkeeper who has been under contract with BSC Young Boys since the 1999/00 season . He is also a former substitute goalkeeper for the Swiss national team , for whom he made a total of eleven appearances between 2008 and 2013.

Career

Marco Wölfli, whose mother comes from Sicily , began his career in the 1997/1998 season with Fulgor Grenchen. The following season he played for FC Solothurn and in the 1999/2000 season the then 17-year-old moved to the BSC Young Boys. He then went on loan to FC Thun for two years , where he played a total of 14 games. In the following season the BSC Young Boys signed him again. There he was first goalkeeper before he received competition from Patrick Bettoni in the following season . However, Wölfli won this duel. Since a torn Achilles tendon in December 2013, Wölfli has been replaced by Yvon Mvogo as the goalkeeper in the Bernese goal. Wölfli continues to wear the shirt number 1 and is the first choice in the cup games.

After Mvogo's move to RB Leipzig in summer 2017, David von Ballmoos is the goalkeeper of BSC Young Boys. After his injury in January 2018, Wölfli was number 1 until the end of the season and won the 2017/18 championship with BSC Young Boys . In the 2018/19 season , Wölfli was again number 2 behind David von Ballmoos.

National team

Marco Wölfli made his national team debut on November 19, 2008 in a friendly against Finland . In the national team he was number 2 behind Diego Benaglio for a long time . On October 15, 2009 Wölfli played for the sick Benaglio against Israel . In this game, Switzerland secured direct qualification for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with a 0-0 draw . At this tournament Wölfli was part of the Swiss squad, but was not used.
