Marc Schneider (born July 23, 1980 in Thun ) is a former Swiss football player and today's coach of FC Thun . In October 2012, he ended his playing career.

Career

Marc Schneider started his professional career at FC Thun. From 1998 to 2002 he played for the first team in the National League B , today's Challenge League . In the 2001/02 season, the Thun qualified for the promotion / relegation round and rose to fourth place in the National League A (today's ASL ). Schneider, who had contributed a lot to this success, moved to FC Zurich in the summer of 2002 , where he initially played seven games for Zurich. But already for the second half of the 2002/03 season he returned to the Bernese Oberland for a year at the request of coach Hanspeter Latour (on loan) and was used 32 times by FC Thun by the end of the 2003/04 preliminary round. After his return to FC Zurich, the defensive all-rounder recorded his greatest successes to date. The left foot celebrated two championship titles ( 2006 and 2007 ) and a cup victory ( 2005 ) with the FCZ . In Zurich, Schneider, who enjoyed the trust of coach Lucien Favre , was not just a regular, but a leading player. The Thun native is said to be an extremely sociable and open person. His character traits therefore repeatedly earned him the captain's armband in Zurich .

At the end of 2007 it was announced that Schneider was planning a move to the BSC Young Boys (YB), but negotiations initially failed. Instead, the FCZ came to an agreement in early 2008 with the then troubled FC St. Gallen , for which the defender played the rest of the season until summer 2008. The team finished second from bottom of the table, lost in the barrage to AC Bellinzona and relegated to the Challenge League. In the 2008/09 season, Schneider finally made the transfer to the Young Boys, with whom he signed a contract until June 30, 2011. However, the defender did not get the time he had hoped for under YB coach Vladimir Petković - in particular in the 2009/10 season (16 appearances), he mainly acted as a substitute. This meant that he returned to his youth club FC Thun in the summer of 2010 , with whom he signed a contract until June 2013.

Schneider established himself as a regular player in the 2010/11 preliminary round, and became an important pillar of the strong Thun back team, which this season is considered to be the second strongest defense in the top Swiss league. But in October 2010 the defender was slowed down by an old injury. Already in autumn 2005 Schneider suffered an Achilles tendon injury and could not be used by the FCZ for several weeks. In September 2006, he then had to undergo an operation on both Achilles tendons. Due to a renewed intervention on the Achilles tendons, the defender was now also out from October 30, 2010 to February 15, 2011. On March 6, 2011, he was used for the first time after his injury break in a serious fight when he came on in the 88th minute of the home game against FC Luzern .

Schneider was still used in the 2012/13 season, but ended his active career in October of the same year. He will stay with FC Thun as a junior coach.

National team

At the age of 18, Marc Schneider, who was trained at FC Thun, urged himself for a junior national team for the first time. On May 17, 1998 he was called up for a game between Switzerland U-18 and the Italian U-18 juniors, which was lost 3-1. The defender had his next four international appearances in the same year with the Swiss U-19 junior national team, namely two internationals against Denmark and one European Championship qualifier against Lithuania and Bosnia-Herzegovina . In 2000 Schneider also played another international match against Norway with the U21s and sat on the reserve bench against Germany.

International competitions

Schneider had his debut in international competitions in the professional field on June 22, 2002, when he won a clear 7-0 win against NK Brotnjo Čitluk with FC Zurich at the Intertoto Cup . With the Zurich team he played two more Intertoto Cup games, one game in the UEFA Cup qualification against Legia Warsaw and five in the UEFA Cup , as well as three Champions League qualifiers. Schneider was later used by YB in two games in the UEFA Cup qualification and one in the UEFA Cup . In addition, FC Thun offered him for two Intertoto Cup matches.
