Mark A. Gabriel
Mark A. Gabriel (born December 30, 1957 in Egypt ) is an Egyptian journalist , Islam expert and book author. He was an imam and lecturer at al-Azhar University in Cairo. Today he lives in the USA as a recognized asylum seeker . His book Islam and Terrorism , published in 2004, has been translated into over 50 languages.
Life
According to his own account, Gabriel knew the Koran by heart at the age of twelve and studied Islamic culture and history at al-Azhar University , which he completed with a doctorate . At the age of 28, he became a lecturer in Islamic history at al-Azhar University in Cairo and an imam in Giza . After turning away from Islam, he experienced torture, imprisonment and several assassinations.
In 1994 he converted to Christianity . He left his homeland Egypt and changed his name from "Mustafa" to Mark A. Gabriel . After converting to Christianity, he studied world religions (Masters) at Florida Christian University in Orlando and graduated with a Ph.D. in Christian Education. In 2003 Gabriel became a member of the Oxford Society of Scholars. He does not live in secret, but appears in public and uses his photo in his publications. Mark A. Gabriel lives in the USA and is married to a German woman.
Positions
In his first book Islam and Terrorism , Gabriel deals with the causes of Islamist terrorism . Here and in other publications he examined in particular the religious factor in the motivation of Islamic terrorists, referring to the writings of Hassan al Banna , Sayid Qutb and Sayyid Abul Ala Maududi . According to Mark A. Gabriel, there are five guiding principles in the thinking of Islamists :
- Do not obey any other law than the Islamic one.
- You are surrounded by unbelievers.
- Islam must come to power.
- Jihad is the only way to victory.
- Faith is the attraction.
The Sharia , the God-given law, has an absolute claim for Islamists. After Gabriel condemn jihadist the democracy as these the people gives power to determine for themselves instead of God upon the laws.
The author advocates a new Arabic translation of the Bible in which the Arabic word Allah is no longer used for “God” because this was only introduced later in the 19th century. As Thomas Schirrmacher was able to show, this assumption does not correspond to the facts. The word has been used by Arabic-speaking Christians as a designation for God since late antiquity .
