Stefan Glarner (born November 21, 1987 ) is a Swiss football player who is under contract with FC Thun .

Career

The two-footed midfielder, who can be used on the left as well as on the right wing, began his career at the Meiringen sports association , where he was most recently active for the first team in the 3rd division, 1st class, the sixth highest Swiss division. In 2005, the then Super League club FC Thun (which was playing in the Champions League at the time) noticed him and signed a loan contract with SV Meiringen until the summer of 2006. Stefan Glarner started out in FC Thun U-19, where he continued to impress with his performances. This led to the fact that after a very short test phase he received his first squad for the 1st team. He made his debut in the top division on April 9, 2006, when he was substituted on in the 3-1 win against FC St. Gallen shortly before the end.

In the summer of 2006, the man from Oberhas finally signed a professional contract with FC Thun. In the 2006/07 season Glarner played mainly for the youth teams of FC Thun and acted as a substitute in the first team (he came six times). From the following season he was a regular full-back in the starting line-up of the Bernese Oberland .

The development of the young midfield player did not go unnoticed outside the club. On September 5, 2007, Stefan Glarner was called up for the U-20 national team for the first time and won a respectable draw with his team against Italy. Shortly afterwards he was also invited to play in the U-21 European Championship selection games. Glarner's soaring continued when he scored his first goal for FC Thun in the 60th minute of the home game against Swiss champions FC Zurich on October 28, 2007 (final result: 1: 1).

A difficult phase for the Bernese Oberland Association followed suddenly. Although FC Thun played the Cup semi-final against FC Basel on February 27, 2008 (in which Glarner sustained a head injury), it lost it as well as the fight against the looming, forced relegation to the second division. During this time, rumors began to circulate that various Super League clubs had expressed their interest in the young midfielder (including FC Sion, FC Aarau, FC Luzern and FC St. Gallen) but were not ready to to pay the transfer fee required by FC Thun.

FC Thun played in the Challenge League for the first time in the 2008/09 season - with Stefan Glarner, who was also part of the team under the new coach Murat Yakin this and the following season . The Oberhasler remained a sure value for the team, but broke his collarbone on April 24, 2010 in the encounter against FC Wohlen . Less than a month later, on May 15, 2010, Glarner made his comeback on the last day of the season in the game against FC Gossau . Thanks in part to his achievements, FC Thun was promoted back to the Axpo Super League after two years in the second-highest division .

In the summer of 2011, Glarner moved to FC Sion on a free transfer . Half a year later he signed a contract with FC Zurich until 2013.

Stefan Glarner's brother Matthias Glarner is also an active athlete. Together they originally formed the defensive bulwark at the Meiringen sports association. However, Matthias hung his soccer shoes on the hook at the age of 15. He is now a successful wrestler and multiple mountain and wreath festival winner and was king of wrestling in 2016.

The sister of Stefan and Matthias Glarner is also fascinated by the round leather. Katrin Glarner, who qualified for the European Championship with the U-17 national team in 2007/08, celebrated the cup victory in 2009 with FC Rot-Schwarz Thun .

On May 21, 2010, the three sporty siblings Katrin, Stefan and Matthias Glarner even competed in a soccer game together. Together with other Bernese sports celebrities - u. a. Mike Schmid (Olympic champion ski cross ), Gian Simmen (Olympic champion snowboard halfpipe), Milaim Rama (FC Thun) - they competed in a celebrity soccer game against the Swiss national cross-country team under Olympic champion Dario Cologna .
