Michael "Mike" Schmid (born March 18, 1984 in Frutigen ) is a Swiss freestyle skier . He specializes in the discipline of ski cross . His greatest success is the Olympic victory in 2010.

biography

Schmid started out as an alpine skier , but gave up this sport at the age of 16 and turned to ski cross. On January 18, 2004 he made his debut in Laax in the World Cup and came in 38th place. He scored World Cup points for the first time on January 15, 2005 when he finished 22nd in Pozza di Fassa . Six days later the first top 10 placement followed in Kreischberg . At the 2005 World Cup in Ruka, he achieved his best result to date, finishing sixth.

On January 20, 2006 Schmid came second in Kreischberg and was the first time on the podium in a World Cup race. Almost a year later, a third place followed in Inawashiro . At the 2007 World Cup , he finished 10th. Two more podium places were added in the 2007/08 season. On January 5th, 2009 Schmid won the first World Cup in St. Johann in Tirol . By contrast, the 2009 World Cup in Inawashiro was rather disappointing with 15th place.

Schmid won the first two World Cup races of the season in San Candido in December 2009 . He has never finished fifth in the 2009/10 season. At the 2010 Winter Olympics , he was the first Olympic champion in this discipline on February 21, ahead of the Austrian Andreas Matt and the Norwegian Audun Grønvold . Schmid had set the fastest time in qualification and had won all of the finals. With the victory on March 14, 2010 in Hasliberg , he secured the early win of the ski cross world cup standings.

In June 2010 Schmid suffered a cruciate ligament rupture on his left knee during training and for this reason missed the 2010/11 season. No sooner had he recovered than he tore another cruciate ligament while skiing, this time on his right knee. After he had not competed in a serious fight for almost two years, he made his comeback on February 17, 2012 and finished second in the busy European Cup race in Davos . Eight days later he intervened again in the World Cup events in Götschen and finished fifth.

Schmid, a cousin of beach volleyball player Nadine Zumkehr , is a trained road builder and continues to do this job during the summer break. A street named after him was built in his birthplace, Frutigen. He was personally involved in the construction work, as his father's road construction company had won the bid.
