Road construction is a profession that deals with the construction and maintenance of roads , paths and squares . It is assigned to the main construction trade and is learned as part of a multi-year training course. Road builders mainly find employment in road and paving companies. The road construction profession is a recognized training occupation in Germany; in Switzerland, road construction EFZ is a basic occupation .

Focus of activity

The main activity of the road builder includes the new construction and expansion of roads and paths of all kinds as well as their maintenance. For this purpose, earthworks must be carried out , often with the help of construction machinery . The road builder also produces the necessary drainage equipment , such as road gullies and drainage channels . The roads and paths made of asphalt , concrete or pavement are either installed by hand or with the help of machines by the road builder.

In addition to road and path construction, road builders are also used in similar areas. This includes laying cables and supply lines, any landscaping measures and the construction of sports fields. Road builders can, however, also be commissioned with dike and river construction measures and the construction of track systems.

Vocational training

Germany

Today, the road construction profession in Germany is an apprenticeship under the Vocational Training Act . Learning the profession does not require a school leaving certificate; therefore it also offers young people without a secondary school diploma a qualified career opportunity. The apprenticeship period up to the journeyman's examination generally lasts 36 months. Prerequisites for independent practice of the trade are the master craftsman's examination and entry in the trade register .

The profession of road builder was added to the list of craft trades in 1934 and recognized as a profession in 1958. The forerunner profession was the paving profession , recognized in 1939 , which in turn developed from the profession of stone setting. Due to the changes and developments in road construction technology, the profession of paver was transferred to the profession of road builder and dissolved in 1957.

Switzerland

In Switzerland, road construction EFZ is a basic occupation , and after 3 years it concludes with the federal certificate of proficiency. A completed elementary school is required . The training takes place at the vocational school Verkehrswegbauer in Sursee (block courses with a total of 25 weeks).
