Asphalt builder (also asphalt builder or obsolete black road builder ) is a recognized training occupation and includes the production of road surfaces for z. B. Motorways, trunk roads, city streets, bicycle paths, footpaths or floors for halls and rooms. In addition, they perform waterproofing work on structures of all kinds.

education

According to the Vocational Training Act , no specific school education is required. This is why the profession also offers qualified vocational training for young people without a secondary school diploma. In Germany, this usually lasts three years.

In the first year there is a basic training in which basic structural engineering skills are learned. The other two years serve to deepen specialist knowledge, for example with regard to sealing against soil moisture or the production of mastic asphalt mixtures.

As dual vocational training, asphalt paver training takes place in equal parts in the vocational school and in the training company. The lessons in the vocational school convey the theoretical basics, while in the company mainly practical work is carried out. If the training company cannot guarantee that certain content is conveyed, for example due to insufficient equipment, the trainees will still spend some time in an inter-company training center.

Remuneration during training

The amount of the  training  allowance is usually based on collective bargaining agreements and can vary in the individual federal states.

  • 1st year of training: 610 - 700 euros
  • 2nd year of training: 750 - 1200 euros
  • 3rd year of training: 1000 - 1300 euros

job profile

Manual skills and technical interest as well as the ability to work in a team are required; the use on constantly changing construction sites also requires flexibility. Strength is required for the job: In individual cases, for example, asphalt builders use B. when transporting mastic asphalt from the mastic asphalt cooker to installation sites that are difficult to access, even today a support yoke with two wooden buckets. According to the construction industry trade association , a total weight (support yoke and filled bucket) of 55 to 60 kg is carried. Therefore, the proportion of women in this occupation is very low at 2.2% (as of 2011).

Often machines are used in asphalt paving, the operation of which is an integral part of the job. Asphalt builders are exposed to increased noise pollution due to the operation of these noisy road construction machines and the uninterrupted traffic driving past the construction site; Communication is often only possible with a show of hands.

Asphalt builders are employed in construction companies that are active in the field of road, industrial, water, bridge or general civil engineering. Employment in road maintenance depots is also possible.

Due to the strong dependence of the asphalt paving on the weather , there is less activity, especially in winter or at low temperatures. In summer the opposite applies accordingly. Night work is also part of the job, as the road closures required for construction work can often only be carried out at night. Work is often done in so-called columns, i.e. in working groups. Small groups or individual workers are only assigned to smaller construction projects.

As a result of the tar ban in the 1970s, the use of bitumen , which is harmless to health, and the use of temperature-reduced asphalt, the asphalt paver is no longer exposed to any increased health risks.
