Grønvold began winter sports as a toddler and competed in his first race at the age of three. After attending the sports high school in Geilo , he joined the Norwegian national ski team in 1993. As a specialist in the fast disciplines, he only started in Downhill and Super-G in the Alpine Ski World Cup . For the first time in the points, Grønvold made it in 1996 on the downhill from Val-d'Isère with rank 25. His most successful season was 1998/99 . This winter he achieved the only podium of his alpine career with third place on the downhill in the Sierra Nevada , and he also finished fifth in Val-d'Isère and Kitzbühel . He finished the overall downhill ranking in eleventh place.
The following years were less successful for the Norwegian. Until 2004 he only made it into the top ten of a World Cup race twice. Only in the lower class European Cup did he win in 2000.
After no good results in alpine skiing for a long time, Grønvold started ski cross in 2004 . First in a team supported by Rossignol , he has been back in the Norwegian national team since 2006. In ski cross, Grønvold soon had major successes. He won the bronze medal in the ski cross competition, which was held for the first time in 2005 as part of the Freestyle Skiing World Championships . In 2007 he won two World Cup races and this season decided the ski cross discipline ranking for himself. He has also been three times Norwegian ski cross champion.
At the Olympic Winter Games 2010 Grønvold won the bronze medal, where he was able to overtake the fallen Christopher Del Bosco just before the finish . Another victory came in the World Cup, which was enough for third place in the discipline ranking.
