Christopher "Chris" Del Bosco (born March 30, 1982 in Colorado Springs , Colorado ) is a Canadian freestyle skier . He specializes in the discipline of ski cross . In 2011 he became world champion.

biography

Del Bosco, the son of a Canadian and an American, grew up in Vail , Colorado . He showed talent in several sports, but especially in alpine skiing , which is why he took part in FIS races from November 1997 and made his debut in the Nor-Am Cup a year later . However, he could not cope with the situation, drank alcohol excessively and smoked marijuana . Because of drug abuse, two junior championship titles in skiing and downhill mountain biking were stripped from him, whereupon the American Ski Association excluded him from the junior squad in 2000. As a result, Del Bosco could not get rid of his alcohol addiction for years . At the end of 2004 he fell into a creek bed in a state of intoxication and broke a cervical vertebra - just because a passer-by accidentally discovered him could he be saved from death by freezing in time.

At the insistence of his sister, Del Bosco underwent rehab and began serious sports again as a ski crosser. At the X-Games he won the bronze medal, but then relapsed again. An understanding judge saved him from a year in prison for repeated driving while drunk and gave him a second chance, which he took advantage of. At the end of 2006, a person in charge of the Canadian Ski Association learned that Del Bosco was a dual citizen and offered him to start for Canada in the ski cross discipline.

Del Bosco made his first appearance in the Freestyle Skiing World Cup on January 12, 2008 and finished 17th in Les Contamines . He immediately established himself at the top of the world and at the end of the 2007/08 season was able to show two fourth places as the best results. On January 10, 2009, he again achieved a podium for the first time in Les Contamines, the first victory followed on February 6, 2009 in Cypress Mountain . At the 2009 World Championships in Inawashiro , he just missed a medal in fourth. In the 2009/10 season , Del Bosco won two World Cup races, Alpe d'Huez and Lake Placid, and the gold medal at the X Games. Before the 2010 Winter Olympics, he was one of the shortlisted favorites, but fell in the final run just before the finish and was ultimately fourth.

In the 2010/11 season , Del Bosco won three World Cup races (Les Contamines, Blue Mountain and Voss ), while he finished second at the 2011 X Games. At the 2011 World Cup in Deer Valley , he achieved the greatest success of his career to date by winning the gold medal. During the 2011/12 World Cup season, he achieved three podium finishes and won the ski cross race at the X Games for the second time. Due to an injury, he only entered the 2012/13 World Cup season in February . Nevertheless, he managed to finish on the podium again, during which he finished sixth at the 2013 World Championships in Voss .

After the 2013/14 season started with some disappointing results, Del Bosco won a World Cup race for the seventh time in Val Thorens in January 2014 . On the other hand, he could not meet the high expectations at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi and only finished 17th. The 2014/15 World Cup season , in which he only had three top 10 results, was also disappointing . At the beginning of the 2015/16 World Cup season , Del Bosco won two more World Cup races in Montafon and Val Thorens. There were also three more podium places. He forgave the possible victory in the discipline classification through inconsistent performances in the middle of the season.

Five more top 10 placings, including a second place in the last race, were added in the 2016/17 World Cup season . At the start of the 2017/18 World Cup season , Del Bosco won the race in Val Thorens, which was synonymous with his tenth World Cup victory. At the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he had a hard fall in qualifying for the main competition and suffered a broken pelvis , four fractures of the ribs and a bruised lung .
