François Place (born July 2, 1989 in Albertville ) is a French freestyle skier and former alpine ski racer . He starts in the ski cross discipline .

Career

Place began his sports career as an alpine ski racer . He started in FIS races in December 2004 and specialized in the disciplines of slalom and giant slalom . The first appearances in the European Cup followed in January 2007. In 2008 he became French slalom junior champion. His best result at the Junior World Championships in 2009 was fifth place in slalom. On February 21, 2009 Place made his debut in the Alpine Ski World Cup . He took part in a total of 39 World Cup races, but never managed to qualify for the second round and remained without a single World Cup point. In 2010 he won the combination at the French championships. In the European Cup he was on the podium five times, two of them as the winner. In the 2012/13 European Cup season, he finished ninth in the overall ranking and sixth in the combined ranking.

Due to a lack of success in the Alpine Ski World Cup, Place switched to ski cross at the beginning of the 2016/17 season . At the end of November 2016 he started in the Pitztal at the Austrian championships and in the European Cup. On January 11, 2017, with 3rd place in Val Thorens , he achieved a podium finish in the second European Cup participation, and won a day later at the same location. With three more victories and a third place, he decided the ski cross discipline of the European Cup for himself. In the Freestyle World Cup , Place started for the first time on February 11, 2017 and finished fifth in Idre . He qualified for the 2017 World Championships in the Sierra Nevada , where he surprisingly won the bronze medal.

In the 2017/18 season , Place achieved five results among the top ten in the World Cup. At the Freestyle World Championship 2019 in Park City , he won the world title.
