Max Braithwaite
Max Braithwaite (born December 7, 1911 in Nokomis , Saskatchewan , † March 19, 1995 in Brighton , Ontario ) was a Canadian writer.
Life
Braithwaite grew up with seven siblings in Prince Albert and Saskatoon. He studied at the University of Saskatchewan and worked as a teacher from 1933. From 1940 to 1945 he served in the Canadian Navy with the Royal Canadian Volunteer Services in Toronto. He then lived as a freelance writer in Ontario. He wrote novels, short stories, books for young people, plays and film scripts.
His humorous novel trilogy Why Shoot the Teacher (1965), Never Sleep Three in a Bed (1969) and The Night We Stole the Moutie's Car (1971) is autobiographically tinged . Why Shoot the Teacher was filmed in 1977 by Silvio Narizzano (German title: One does not shoot at the teacher ), Braithwaite received the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal in 1972 for The Night We Stole the Mountie's Car . His youth books The Mystery of the Muffled Man (1962) and The Valley of the Vanishing Birds (1963) became famous . in All the Way Home (1986) he addressed the impoverishment of the rural population in Canada.
He wrote a radio adaptation of Stephen Leacock's Sunshine Sketches of a Little Town and pioneered educational broadcasts with his series Voices of the Wild . A selection of his works was published in 1983 under the title Max: The Best of Braithwaite .
