history
Loyalists settled in the area from 1796 and named the place, based on Brighton in the county of East Sussex, also Brighton. The place quickly developed into a small trading center for various industrial goods. Due to the favorable climatic conditions, agriculture, in particular the operation of apple tree plantations, became the dominant branch of the economy. A large number of different cultivated apple varieties were grown, new apple flavors were bred and distributed worldwide. When other regions also planted apple orchards and were able to produce more cheaply in some areas, the areas in Brighton were partly used for other agricultural products. The tradition of apple cultivation is remembered as part of an annual Apple Festival in autumn . In some farms, 40 different apple varieties are still cultivated and harvested.
Due to the natural beauty and abundance of bird species in the Presqu'ile Provincial Park , which begins southwest of Brighton, and the Bay of Quinte to the east, tourism is becoming increasingly important and the city is often visited by ornithologists .
