Dave O'Brien (born January 16, 1962 in Brighton , Ontario ) is a retired Canadian ice hockey player .

Career

O'Brien played in his junior years with Dan Hodgson , Rick Nasheim and Geoff Courtnall at the Cowichan Valley Capitals in the Canadian junior league British Columbia Hockey League . He started his career in German ice hockey in the summer of 1981 in the 2nd Bundesliga at EC Hannover , but moved to Duisburger SC in the following season . After three seasons he left Duisburg in the direction of Kassel to the local EC Kassel .

In Kassel O'Brien scored a total of 458 points in the four seasons, including the play-off games, and was nicknamed "Marlboro Man" by the fans there. He was one of the most noticeable players in Kassel, not least because of his fighting spirit and the many penalty minutes. Due to his convincing style of play, he moved to the ice hockey Bundesliga for ESV Kaufbeuren in 1988, in which , however, he could not prevail with only 16 completed games and therefore moved again to Duisburger SC in the second division in the same season.

However, O'Brien could not build on the achievements from his time in Kassel either at Grefrather EC or ECD Iserlohn . From 1994 he played for ERC Westfalen Dortmund in 1990 in what was then the second highest German ice hockey league, the 1st League North. The native Canadian returned to his old form in Dortmund and wore the ERC jersey 111 times. He was able to achieve 230 points. After the club had to file for bankruptcy in 1996 , he left the club. Further career stations were various Ruhr area clubs in the Regionalliga NRW . In 2001 he ended his active sports career at the age of 39.
