Soccer World Cup 2010 / South Africa

qualification

The team was fully qualified to host the World Cup, but still took part in qualifying games of the African Football Association CAF , as these also served as a qualifying tournament for the 2010 African Championship .

Since the African Championship was held in Angola, Angola also took part in the World Cup qualification. If the South African team had qualified for the third round, which they ultimately did not have, the games with South African participation would have been counted for qualifying for the African Championship, but not for the World Cup qualification. The opposite was true for Angola. In addition to South Africa, Angola was also eliminated after the second qualifying round due to its poor placement in the "rankings for runners-up".

Previously, the South African national team met in the second round in Group 4 against Nigeria , Sierra Leone and Equatorial Guinea and was placed on the “group runners-up” list as second behind Nigeria.

Despite the win against France, the South African team missed progress due to the poorer goal difference. This made South Africa the first nation to be eliminated as hosts in the preliminary round.
