Itumeleng Khune (born June 20, 1987 in Ventersdorp ) is a South African football goalkeeper .
Club career
Khune joined the Kaizer Chiefs at the age of 13 and has been part of the professional team since 2005, but only made his league debut in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) on August 25, 2007 after Rowen Fernandez left against Jomo Cosmos . Outstanding performances in his first regular season resulted in a flood of awards. He was voted the best goalkeeper and newcomer of the season and also named the best player of the season by the PSL league players. When the Chiefs won the Telkom Knockout , he received the awards for best player and goalkeeper. Within the club, he was named Player of the Season in 2008 and also voted the best player of the season by his teammates.
National team
National coach Carlos Alberto Parreira nominated Khune for the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations without having previously played an international match. During the tournament he remained behind Moeneeb Joseph's goalkeeper, but made his international debut on March 11, 2008 against Zimbabwe a short time later . Under Parreira's successor Joel Santana , Khune became a goalkeeper and was part of the 2009 Confederations Cup in his own country. At this tournament he was in goal in all games of the South African national team . Even after Parreira returned to the office of national coach, Khune remained a regular goalkeeper and was also called up for the 2010 World Cup . In the opening game against Mexico he showed a strong performance. In the second group game against Uruguay he received the red card in the 76th minute after an emergency brake . His place in goal was taken by Moeneeb Josephs, who also represented him in the last group game against France . Since South Africa was already eliminated after that, Khune did not come to this World Cup again.
