Moeneeb Josephs (born May 19, 1980 in Mitchell's Plain , Cape Town ) is a South African football player . Josephs was the goalkeeper of the South African national team at the 2008 Africa Cup .
Club career
Josephs made his debut in the Premier Soccer League for Cape Town Spurs on September 7, 1997 . In 1999 the Cape Town Spurs and Seven Stars merged to form Ajax Cape Town , where he continued his career. In the 2002/03 season he established himself as a regular goalkeeper and was voted "PSL Players' Player of the Year" by the league players. In 2006 he moved to Bidvest Wits for around 1.3 million rand . Two years later he moved for an estimated 2.5 million rand - a record amount for a goalkeeper transfer in South Africa - to league rivals Orlando Pirates . With the Pirates he narrowly missed his first championship title in the 2008/09 season, in the final standings they stayed behind Supersport United only because of the worse goal difference .
National team
Josephs made his debut for the South African national team in 2003 . In 2006 and 2008 he was part of the squad at the African Championship . While he remained behind Calvin Marlin in 2006 without use, he was in 2008 after the injury-related failure of Rowen Fernandez goalkeeper in the preliminary round. In 2007 he led the South African selection as captain to win the 2007 COSAFA Cup . In May 2009 he was appointed to the provisional squad for the Confederations Cup , but did not make the jump into the final squad.
He was appointed to the squad at the 2010 World Cup in his own country. In the opening game against Mexico and in the second group game against Uruguay , however, Itumeleng Khune was initially preferred to him. But when he saw the red card in the game against Uruguay due to an emergency brake, Josephs was substituted on and conceded two goals in this game. In the final group game against France , he represented the suspended Khune for the full 90 minutes. Despite the 2-1 win, the hosts were eliminated in the preliminary round.
