Steven Pienaar (born March 17, 1982 in Johannesburg ) is a former South African football player . He played in midfield in the position of playmaker .

Pienaar started his career in South Africa for Ajax Cape Town . This association belongs to Ajax Amsterdam AG , which runs this association to promote young talents.

Ajax Amsterdam

From 2001 to 2006 Pienaar played in the Dutch league for Ajax Amsterdam . At Ajax he was in addition to the playmaker position also in the position of right winger used.

Borussia Dortmund

In 2006 his contract ran out and he moved to Borussia Dortmund , where he was supposed to replace Tomáš Rosický . There he was rarely able to convince in the 2006/07 season , so that he moved to Everton in the Premier League in summer 2007 .

Everton FC

Everton loaned Pienaar from BVB for a year in the summer of 2007. There the South African played mainly in the left midfield. After 28 league appearances and two goals in its first year, the club made use of an option to buy for around two million pounds sterling in April 2008 and provided Pienaar with a contract until 2011.

Tottenham Hotspur

In January 2011 Pienaar moved to Tottenham Hotspur . He played his first game for Spurs on January 22, 2011 over 84 minutes in a 1-1 draw against Newcastle United . The time in Tottenham was marked by injuries and so the midfielder only came to ten games. After Pienaar hardly got a chance in the first half of the 2011/12 Premier League due to an injury , a change during the winter break became more and more probable in order to gain match practice.

Everton FC

On January 31, 2012, Pienaar was loaned to his old employer Everton FC until the end of the season. There he developed into a regular player and found his way back to his old form. He was finally signed on during the summer break. Pienaar signed a four-year contract with Everton, costing 4.5 million pounds transfer fee.

Sunderland AFC

In the summer of 2016, Pienaar joined Sunderland AFC for one year . With this, however, Pienaar finished last in the Premier League and rose with the club in the two-tier Football League Championship .

Bidvest Vits FC

After the expiration of his contract, he left the relegated Premiere League and joined Bidvest Wits in his South African home in the ABSA Premiership, the first division in South Africa. With the club Pienaar also took part in the African Champions League. He only made four league appearances.

End of career

Pienaar ended his active career in early March 2018.

National team

Pienaar plays in the South African national team . He made his debut on May 23, 2002 against Turkey. Shortly afterwards he took part with the national team at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea . In 2010 he also took part with South Africa in the World Cup in his own country. In October 2012 he announced his resignation from the national team.
