Teboho Aaron Mokoena (born November 25, 1980 in Boipatong ) is a former South African football player and current record national player for his country. He ended his active career in the summer of 2013 with the Bidvest Wits .
Career
Aaron Mokoena began his career with the Jomo Cosmos . The then 17-year-old only stayed there for a year before moving to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in Germany. In Leverkusen, Mokoena was not used once in his only year in Germany. A year later, the South African moved to Ajax Amsterdam in the Netherlands , where he only made eight appearances in two years. That is why he said goodbye to Ajax in 2001 and moved to Belgium for Beerschot AC . Aaron stayed there for two years; Overall, he came in Antwerp on 41 missions and two goals. In 2003, KRC Genk bought Mokoena for 400,000 euros, while KRC Genk made 33 games in two years. Then Blackburn Rovers brought him to England for the equivalent of 900,000 euros. He played there from January 2005 until the end of the 2009 season, scoring two goals in 135 games before moving to Portsmouth FC . There he was able to play another season in the Barclays Premier League before relegating his club to the Football League Championship . There the club was able to hold out for a year, but had to relegate to Football League One in Mokoena's third season . That is why the then 32-year-old Mokoena left the club for South Africa in 2012. Mokoena completed his last season as a player in his hometown of Johannesburg with the Bidvest Wits , where he made 15 appearances.
His senior team debut was Aaron Mokoena at the age of 18 years, 2 months and 26 days, on February 20, 1999 in a friendly against Botswana ; South Africa won the game 2-1. So Aaron is the youngest national team debutant of South Africa.
With the South African national team he took part in the following competitions: Soccer Africa Cup 2002 , Soccer World Cup 2002 , Soccer Africa Cup 2004 , Soccer Africa Cup 2006 , Soccer Africa Cup 2008 , FIFA Confederations Cup 2009 and Soccer World Cup 2010 . In total, Mokoena took part in seven national team competitions.
The then 29-year-old Mokoena made his 100th international match on May 31, 2010 in a 5-0 win over Guatemala in a preparatory friendship game for the 2010 World Cup . In total, he came to 107 internationals; his last international match was a 0-0 win against Sierra Leone on October 10, 2010 in qualifying for the 2012 Africa Cup . He is also the record captain of his country; He was captain of the national team 63 times.
