history

Beerschot

Foundation, establishment & dissolution of the association

Beerschot AC was founded in 1899 at Het Kiel, a southern suburb of Antwerp . Just one year later, the club was affiliated to the Royal Belgian Football Association and had the registration number 13 there. The colors of the football club were mauve and white, their home games took place in the Antwerp Olympic Stadium. The club played at the highest national level for several decades and were Belgian champions seven times before the Second World War . Beerschot also won the Belgian Cup twice . Since Beerschot had encountered financial difficulties for several years, the club was excluded on June 12, 1999 from the Royal Belgian Football Association.

Germinal Ekeren

Until 1989: foundation and gradual rise

In 1920 in the city of Ekeren, a suburb of Antwerp , Germinal Ekeren was founded. The colors of the football club were yellow and red, their home games took place in the former “Veltwijckpark” stadium. The Germinal is the seventh month of the French Revolutionary Calendar and a symbol of the socialist movement. Between 1920 and 1940 the club took part in the championships of the Socialist Football Association , then from 1940 to 1942 of the Flemish Football Association . From 1942 the club was affiliated with the Royal Belgian Football Association under the name FC Germinal Ekeren and had the registration number 3530. In 1952 the club took part in a Belgian championship (fourth division) for the first time. After FC Germinal Ekeren had been awarded the royal title in 1971, the club was officially called Koninklijke Football Club Germinal Ekeren , or KFC Germinal Ekeren for short. In the 1980s, the club went from a provincial level to a professional level. From 1981 to 1984 the club played in the fourth division, from 1984 to 1988 in the third division and 1988/89 in the second division . In 1989 the association rose to the q. Division on.

From 1990: establishment and national success

In 1991 the team finished fifth and thus took part in the UEFA Cup ( 1991/92 ), but lost the first round against Celtic Glasgow 3-1. In 1995 Ekeren finished sixth, qualified for the Intertoto Cup , where the team also failed in the first round. In the 1995/96 season, the team reached third place and qualified for the UEFA Cup, but failed again in the first round, this time against Grazer AK . A year later, Ekeren won the Belgian Cup , which is the club's greatest national success, and took part in the European Cup Winners' Cup the following season . Ekeren was beaten in the second round by VfB Stuttgart . Ekeren finished third in the 1998/99 season but lost to Servette FC in the qualifying round for the UEFA Cup .

1999: Stadium problem

Germinal Ekeren had problems with his stadium in 1999, despite his sporting success. The introduction of an obtainable license to participate in the top two leagues forced the club to expand its facilities. However, after some residents had complained to the court about the expected higher noise pollution and the stadium was in a recreation park, enlargement was impossible. Germinal Ekeren was on the verge of losing his license without a replacement venue.

fusion

Beerschot VAC, who received no further license from the Royal Belgian Football Association on June 12, 1999, gave up the club grounds at the Olympic Stadium . Without that there was a real merger, FC Germinal Ekeren took possession of it and changed its club name to Koninklijke Football Club Germinal Beerschot Antwerp on July 1, 1999 . The yellow-red club colors of Germinal Beerschot Antwerp have been expanded to include the color mauve (from Beershot VAC). The club kept the registration number (3530) from Germinal Ekeren to keep its place in the first division , but has since played at the Beerschot AC stadium and expanded the stadium for the 2001/02 season. By keeping the registration number of Germinal Ekeren, the earlier successes of Germinal Ekeren but not those of Beerschot VAC were included in the history of the KFC Germinal Beerschot.

After various financial problems, Marc Brys was hired as a trainer in 2004 . The Belgian led the team to a national cup win - the only trophy the club could win after the merger - after a 2-1 win over Belgian champions Club Bruges. Goal scorers were Karel Snoeckx and Kris De Wree . This enabled the team to take part in the UEFA Cup . In the following season Marc Brys was released after just 7 games. Until then, only 4 out of 21 possible points had been won. He was replaced by Jos Daerden , who finished sixth with the club at the end of the season. At the end of the season Jos Dearden was replaced by Marc Brys after controversy with the club's board. After only one (2006/07 season) Marc Brys was replaced by Harm van Veldhoven .

Because of the breakthrough of players such as François Sterchele , Hernan Losada , Gustavo Colman , Kenny Steppe and Ederson Tormena , Germinal Beerschot under coach van Veldhoven gradually seemed to establish himself in the top third of the table. Highlights here were a streak of nine wins in a row during the 2007/08 season and fifth place in the final table.

The start of the 2008/09 season was unsatisfactory. Germinal Beerschot lost in the second round of the Intertoto Cup against Neftçi Baku and only got 8 out of a possible 33 points after eleven league games. When the team failed in the seventh round of the Belgian cup competition against third-class KRC Mechelen , coach Harm van Veldhoven resigned. Shortly thereafter, the former Belgian national coach Aimé Anthuenis was introduced, but was dismissed due to poor results at the beginning of the following season. Jos Daerden was appointed as his successor. Although the team ended up in third place after the first half of the season - which also set a new club record after the merger - Jos Daerden's contract was not extended due to a disappointing second half. Glen De Boeck took over the vacant coaching position . In the 2010/11 season the results were unsatisfactory and Glen De Boeck was sacked on November 29, who was replaced by Jacky Mathijssen .

Beerschot AC

The 2010/11 season was marked by internal battles and power struggles within the boardroom, which were widely spread in the media. In February 2011, Patrick Vanoppen acquired 99 percent of the club. The association was then restructured. In May of the same year, the club's name officially changed to the Koninklijke Beerschot Antwerp Club (K. Beerschot AC). The new logo reflects on its club history and gives the bears a prominent place again. The sign to the left of the bear refers to the numbering of the Mayans and should be read as “13” - the number also represents the first received registration number that was issued by the Royal Belgian Football Association . Beerschot still kept the registration number (3530) of Germinal Beerschot Antwerp in order to keep its place in the first division . By keeping the registration number of Germinal Beerschot Antwerp, the earlier successes of Germinal Beerschot Antwerp, but not those of Beerschot VAC, were included in the history of the Beerschot club. There is also the Latin proverb "Tene quod bene" (German: Hold on to what is good. Or Hold on to it because it is good! ) And the acorns in the logo.
