Julien Cools (born February 13, 1947 in Retie ) is a former Belgian football player .

Player career

Cools began his career as a club player in 1958 with his hometown club, SK Branddonk Retie . In 1963 he made his breakthrough in the men's team, for which he was active up to and including 1969, before he came to the first class at FC Beringen. After he had to relegate with the team in the same season in the second Belgian league, he rose again with the team in the top division of the country after the 1971/72 season. In 1973 he came to Club Bruges , where he stayed until 1979. Cools was Belgian champion in 1976, 1977 and 1978, Belgian cup winner in 1977 and made it to the UEFA Cup final in 1976 and championship final in 1978. In 1979 he moved to Germinal Beerschot. After two years he said goodbye from Antwerp to Dessel and signed with KFC Dessel Sport . He completed his last three years as an active player at KVC Westerlo , with whom he was twice master in the lower class and subsequently twice rose to the next higher division.

In 1977 he was player of the year in Belgium.

International playing career

Internationally, he played 35 times for Belgium and scored two goals. He took part in the 1980 European Football Championship in Italy and was there with the team as captain, Vice European Champion.
