Emmanuel "Manno" Sanon (born June 25, 1951 in Port-au-Prince , † February 21, 2008 in Orlando , Florida ) was a Haitian football player and coach .

With 47 goals scored and 100 appearances, Sanon is the record scorer for the Haitian national team and the player with the most appearances for his country. To this day, Sanon is best known for his two goals at the 1974 World Cup .

To this day, Sanon is not only considered one of the best footballers in Haiti, but also one of the most popular. So Sanon is of great importance for the Haitians, which is roughly comparable to Diego Maradona for Argentina .

Career

As a player

In 1974, Sanon played for the Haitian football club Don Bosco FC in Petionville, a suburb of the capital Port-au-Prince . With the Haitian national team , he qualified for the 1974 World Cup in Germany. It was the only participation of the island state from the Caribbean in a soccer world championship . At this World Cup tournament, Sanon created a sensation in the first game. Haiti's first opponent was Italy, vice world champion and one of the tournament favorites. Newcomer Haiti couldn't figure out any chances. On June 15, 1974, Haiti fought 0-0 at halftime. Immediately after the restart in the Munich Olympic Stadium , Emmanuel Sanon scored the lead for Haiti in the 46th minute of the game. Italy's goalkeeper Dino Zoff had been without conceding a goal for 1,143 minutes since September 20, 1972. Fast forward Sanon broke that record and made football history. Haiti still lost the game 3-1. Then the team lost to Poland 7-0 and Argentina 1: 4. Emmanuel Sanon was successful again in the last group game against Argentina and scored the consolation goal ; thus he became the only goalscorer in his country to date at a World Cup.

After the World Cup he moved to K. Beerschot VAC in the Belgian league, where he stayed until 1980. In 1979 he won the Belgian Cup with his team. He then moved to the USA, where he worked for the Miami Americans and the San Diego Sockers , among others . Then he ended his career.

As a trainer

Between 1983 and 1997 he coached various high schools and football clubs in the United States. From 1999 to 2000 he was the coach of the national soccer team of Haiti, where Haiti played a draw in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2000 against Peru in Miami , but was eliminated after the preliminary round with 1: 4 goals. In 2004/05 he was the youth coach for Ajax Orlando Prospects in the USA.

death

Emmanuel Sanon died in February 2008 at the age of 56 from complications from a pancreatic tumor . At his funeral in Port-au-Prince, all of Haiti's players who were in the squad at the 1974 World Cup attended and carried his coffin.
