Siyabonga Sangweni (born September 29, 1981 in Empangeni ), nickname Nsimbi (iron) or Nduna (leader), is a South African football player .

Career

Sangweni was born in Empangeni , a town near the city of Durban in eastern South Africa . In his youth he played with the Royal Chiefs , where his father and uncle had already played. However, he began his football career at Uthukela FC in Durban. He played there until 2005 when the Golden Arrows signed him. For the club, which is also based in Durban, the central defender has so far played over 100 games in the South African first division and is considered a key player there.

Although players outside the capital Johannesburg find it difficult to be considered for the South African national team , Siyabonga Sangweni got his first chance on May 26, 2007 in a friendly against Malawi. But it took another two years until his next match for the "Bafana Bafana". It was only in the run-up to the 2010 World Cup in his own country that he emerged as a possible regular defender together with Matthew Booth or Bongani Khumalo in the preparatory games and was consequently appointed to South Africa's World Cup squad . He is considered an inconspicuous but very reliable defender who makes up for his deficits in speed with his good positional play.
