Reto Pirmin Ziegler (born January 16, 1986 in Geneva ) is a Swiss football player who is under contract with FC Dallas in Major League Soccer . His brother Ronald Ziegler is also a footballer; he plays in Switzerland for Étoile Sportive FC Malley .

Career

In the club

In his youth Ziegler played for various youth teams in western Switzerland until he moved to the youth department of the record champions of Switzerland, the Grasshopper Club Zurich , in the summer of 2000 . Two years later he made the leap into the professional squad. After 1½ years in the Axpo Super League , the defensive player left the Grasshoppers for England.

In August 2004, Reto Ziegler moved to the Premier League at Tottenham Hotspur , where he scored his first Premier League goal shortly before his 19th birthday. In August 2005 he was loaned to Hamburger SV , from where he returned in January 2006. A short time later, Tottenham loaned him again, this time to Wigan Athletic . From January 2007, he played with Sampdoria in Serie A . In the 2009/10 season he reached fourth place in Serie A with the Genoese and qualified with the club for the following season for participation in the qualifying games of the UEFA Champions League . In the 2010/11 season Genoa could not build on the successes of the previous season and was relegated from Serie A. Ziegler then moved to Juventus Turin at the end of May 2011 , where he signed a four-year contract. Ziegler was loaned to the traditional Turkish club Fenerbahçe SK from Istanbul in the Süper Lig for the 2011/12 season for 600,000 euros . He won the Turkish Cup with Fenerbahce and was runner-up.

On September 6, 2012, Ziegler moved to the Russian first division club Lokomotive Moscow on loan until the end of the season .

After six months, the loan deal was terminated prematurely, as Ziegler was rarely used at Lokomotiv Moscow, also because of injury problems. On January 31, 2013, Ziegler returned to Fenerbahçe on loan until the end of the season and won the Turkish Cup. In the summer of 2013 he returned to Juventus Turin, but was loaned to Serie A promoted Sassuolo Calcio for the 2013/14 season.

On September 25, 2017, Ziegler moved to FC Luzern where he signed a contract until the end of June 2017.

He left this station behind during the winter break and joined the US club FC Dallas on January 2, 2018 .

In the national team

Reto Ziegler played in the Swiss U-17 national team and won the U-17 European championship. Reto Ziegler was mostly active as a captain in the Swiss U21 national team. He was called up again for the Swiss national football team after the last strong performance . He was in the 40-man selection squad for the 2008 European Championships , but was not accepted into the team and was therefore not used at the 2008 European Championships in his own country. He made his debut in the Swiss national football team on March 26, 2005 at the Stade de France against France .

He played with the Swiss U-21 national team in qualifying for the U-21 European Championship 2009 in Sweden. Switzerland qualified for the barrage for entry into the finals of the U-21 European Football Championship. They won 2-1 at home against Spain in the barrage, but lost 3-1 away and therefore did not qualify.

In May 2010, national coach Ottmar Hitzfeld nominated him for the squad for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, after the team had qualified as the first in their group. At the World Cup, Ziegler played through in all three games, including the 1-0 victory over eventual world champions Spain.
