Michael Carrick (born July 28, 1981 in Wallsend ) is a former English football player . He played for Manchester United in the Premier League for 12 years . The central, mostly defensively oriented midfielder began his professional career in London at West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur . With “United” he then celebrated his greatest successes with five English championships ( 2007 , 2008 , 2009 , 2011 , 2013 ) and in the 2007/08 season by winning the Champions League . In the summer of 2018 he ended his career as a professional footballer.

With the English national team , he took part in the World Cup finals in Germany and South Africa in 2006 and 2010 . However, he was only used in one game and was mostly in the shadow of competitors such as Steven Gerrard , Frank Lampard or Gareth Barry . His strengths lay in passing and positional play as well as good ball control.

Athletic career

West Ham United (1997-2004)

Carrick attended Wallsend's Burnside Community High School , where he graduated in 1997 with the GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) . He was courted by several football clubs and then decided for the club West Ham United . At a young age, he appeared on a television program that portrayed the lives of young football players. He won the FA Youth Cup with a youth team in 1999 and defeated Coventry City with the record result - based on this competition - of 9: 0. In August 1999 he made his debut for the professional team and was substituted on for Rio Ferdinand in the 3-0 win over Bradford City . Interrupted by only two one-month loan periods at Swindon Town and Birmingham City , he played for West Ham United for many years and stayed with West Ham for another year after relegation in 2003, while other high-profile players such as Joe Cole , Jermain Defoe and Frédéric Kanouté immediately left the club.

Tottenham Hotspur (2004-06)

Carrick moved to Tottenham Hotspur in August 2004 for an estimated transfer fee of £ 3.5million , with other prominent top division clubs showing interest in signing. After initially minor injuries, he quickly became a fixed point in the midfield of his new club, which had increasingly rejuvenated its squad. As a game designer, he was responsible for the creative moments and defensive behavior for winning the ball.

In the 2005/06 season he scored his first goal in the home game against Sunderland AFC with the late winning goal and a second goal in the 2-1 win against Manchester City . Carrick's good performances were seen by the experts as a decisive factor for Tottenham's upward-pointing form curve. If necessary, he acted either in the defensive or offensive midfield and his improved free kicks represented an increasing threat to opposing defensive lines.

Manchester United (2006-2018)

On July 31, 2006, Carrick was hired by Manchester United . In “negotiation poker”, a £ 10 million offer was initially rejected and an agreement was only reached after significant improvements by “United” - the transfer compensation now consisted of an immediate payment of £ 14 million plus success-related bonus payments of additional ones 4.6 million pounds.

On August 23, 2006 he came in the 3-0 away win in the Premier League by substitution for his debut for United and only three days later he was in the starting line-up for the first time. At the side of Paul Scholes , he was henceforth set in central midfield and was only briefly represented in the event of an injury by the Irishman John O'Shea or the Scottish Darren Fletcher . He immediately won the English championship and another highlight was the 7-1 victory in the Champions League against AS Roma , in which Carrick also scored two long-distance goals - the team then failed in the semifinals at AC Milan . With the commitments of Owen Hargreaves and Anderson , Carrick received further competition in his position and a broken elbow in October 2007 against AS Roma made the sporting prospects initially appear worse. After his comeback in November 2007, however, he remained a central figure in midfield as a “ball conqueror”, won the English championship for the second time in a row and played in the Champions League final against Chelsea on May 21, 2008 . He played the entire 120 minutes and converted the second penalty for United in the ultimately victorious penalty shootout. Four days earlier he had signed a new five-year deal in Manchester. Carrick also played a central role in completing the "Premier League title hattrick" in 2009 and ensured that his team almost played one two games before the end of the season with the 2-1 winner in the 86th minute at Wigan Athletic had a secure 6-point lead over their toughest rivals Liverpool FC . The title defense in the Champions League failed because United lost on May 27, 2009 after a disappointing final performance with 0-2 against FC Barcelona . In winning the League Cup in the same year, he had little share, since he had only completed the last quarter of an hour in the semifinals against Derby County .

In the 2009/10 season he contributed significantly more to the club's renewed league cup win and was in the final eleven, which won 2-1 against Aston Villa . Further title successes failed to materialize and Carrick found it increasingly difficult to defend his midfield position against up-and-coming competition. Due to a number of injury problems in defense, Carrick also helped out for the first time in his professional career in some games as a central defender. In addition, the yellow-red card in the 3-2 victory at AC Milan in the Champions League was Carricks' first suspension in more than ten years as a professional.

In early March 2011, the midfielder still signed a new contract until the end of the 2013/14 season. Although he didn't score a single goal during the 2010/11 season, he was again an important factor in winning his fourth championship with “United”, especially from the end of 2010 in the central defensive midfield . He maintained good form in the 2011/12 season and another Premier League success was only narrowly missed when city rivals Manchester City saved the win in stoppage time on the last match day. Together with newcomer Robin van Persie , who was on the offensive for the accents, Carrick's defensive and leadership skills were once again key factors for Manchester United's 20th English championship in the 2012/13 season. He won the club's internal award for “Player of the Year” and was also elected Team of the Year ( PFA Team of the Year ).

After the departure of long-time successful coach Alex Ferguson , Carrick was one of the many players who did not find their form under the unfortunate successor David Moyes . In an untitled 2013/14 season that didn't even qualify for a European club competition, an Achilles tendon injury in November 2013 was also responsible for Carrick's struggle. In March 2015, Carrick extended his contract with Manchester United until 2016.

On March 12, 2018, Carrick announced his summer retirement.

English national team

Four years and three days after his first brief appearance on May 25, 2001 for the English senior team against Mexico , Carrick came on the occasion of an international trip through the United States against the hosts for the first time in the starting eleven of the "Three Lions". At that time Carrick was only one of many alternatives in the central defensive English midfield, which the then coach Sven-Göran Eriksson also included, for example, Scott Parker and Ledley King . In the role of substitute player Eriksson Carrick called in May 2006 finally in the English squad and in the final tournament itself this played in the round of 16 against Ecuador behind the two central midfielders Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard his only game.

Although Carrick established himself in the regular formation at the English top club Manchester United, his appearances in the English national team remained rare even under Eriksson's successors Steve McClaren and Fabio Capello . Midfield players such as Frank Lampard, Steven Gerrard, Joe Cole and Gareth Barry were mostly preferred to him and there were almost 15 months between two games against Germany (1-2 in August 2007 and 2-1 now under Capello in November 2008). In 2009 he only made two international matches from the start - a friendly against Spain (0: 2) and a World Cup qualifier against Ukraine (0: 1), which is irrelevant for England . For the upcoming 2010 World Cup in South Africa , Capello appointed him to the 23-man squad. However, he was not used in the tournament itself.

Although he continued to play an important role in English club football, he was not included in the Euro 2012 in Ukraine and Poland by Capello's successor Roy Hodgson . This was also due to Carrick's repeated statements that he did not like the role of a supplementary player in the squad.

On August 15, 2012, after a year against Italy (2-1), he made his comeback for England and on the way to successfully qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil , he was in the starting line-up more often (including the decisive 2-0 victory against Poland ). The weak performances in the difficult environment of Manchester United in the 2013/14 season ensured that he was denied the appointment to the squad.
