John Francis O'Shea [ oˈʃɛɨ ] (born April 30, 1981 in Waterford ) is a former Irish football player .
Career
Club career
O'Shea played for Manchester United between 1996 and 2011 , and has been a professional since 1999. From January 2000 to March 2000 he was loaned to Bournemouth AFC . From January 2001 to May 2001 he was on loan again, this time to Royal Antwerp .
O'Shea made his Premier League debut for Manchester on November 4, 2001 against Liverpool . In early 2006 he extended his contract with Manchester United until 2009.
During the 2011 summer break, O'Shea moved to Sunderland AFC together with his teammate Wes Brown . O'Shea signed a four-year contract.
After switching to second division FC Reading in 2018 , the club announced on O'Shea's 38th birthday on Twitter that he would end his professional career after the 2018/19 season.
National team
O'Shea made his debut for the Irish national team on August 15, 2001 against Croatia . He is one of his country's bearers of hope and is a regular player. On October 14, 2014, he played his 100th international match in the European Championship qualifier against world champions Germany and scored the 1-1 equalizer in the last minute of stoppage time.
At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was accepted into Ireland's squad and played the first two games against Sweden and Belgium in the regular team. When the last game was lost 3-0, the team was switched and O'Shea stayed on the bench. He was only brought on again in the round of 16 when opponents France took a 2-1 lead with a double strike and an Irishman was sent off. The game was lost and the team was eliminated.
With 118 internationals, he is the third most male national team player for Ireland.

In 2007 he became a brief goalkeeper when he had to replace the injured Edwin van der Sar in the final minutes of the Manchester United game against Tottenham Hotspur . This was injured and it could not be changed.
