Wesley "Wes" Michael Brown (born October 13, 1979 in Manchester ) is an English football player who is used as a right full-back as well as in central defense .

Athletic career

Brown showed himself to be a talented footballer early on at Burnage High School in Manchester, played for the Fletcher Moss Rangers youth team and was part of the FA School of Excellence in Lilleshall in addition to his training at the Manchester United Academy . At the age of 17 he signed his first professional contract with the Red Devils on November 4, 1996. Both in the reserve and in the youth team, Brown continued his ascent and he won the club's internal election for the best young talent of the year twice as only the second player after Ryan Giggs .

On May 4, 1998, he made his debut as a substitute in the Premier League against Leeds United . He was used regularly in the subsequent 1998/99 season, although he more often held the right full-back instead of his traditional center-back position. In the very first year as full members of the team he won with "United" the triple of Champions League , English Championship and FA Cup - a final participation was him despite previous operations against Bayern Munich , the FC Barcelona and the FC Chelsea in both Cases but not yet granted. After a series of injuries that left him sidelined for the entire 1999/2000 season, he successfully returned to the team that brought home another Premier League title in 2001 - coach Alex Ferguson subsequently ennobled Brown as the most talented defender in his ranks Clubs.

After an untitled 2001/02 season, he managed to win his third championship title in 2003, which he "paid" for on the last day of the match with a severe knee ligament injury. As a result, he missed the first half of the 2003/04 round, but then went back to his old form and won the FA Cup for the second time in his career. Before that, he was so convincing in the semi-finals against Arsenal that he was named best player (“Man of the Match”).

At the side of Rio Ferdinand , Brown worked in the 2005/06 season increasingly the regular place in central defense, which the Serbian international Nemanja Vidić made him increasingly disputed after his arrival the following year. Brown came out sporadically and in 2007 won his fourth English championship. On March 23, 2008, in a 3-0 win against Liverpool FC, he scored his first goal after almost three years without a hit and after he had refused a contract extension in December 2007, he signed a new contract for five years and in April 2008 was thus in the company of Rio Ferdinand and defensive midfielder Michael Carrick . In addition to the fifth championship title, the Champions League trophy was the biggest success in Brown's career in 2008 and after the first missed opportunity nine years earlier, he now completed almost 120 minutes in the final against Chelsea - just before the ultimately victorious penalty shoot-out he was exchanged for the better shooter Anderson .

Despite this accumulation of titles, the bad luck with injuries remained a constant companion of his career. With Rafael and Gary Neville , he initially competed for the right full-back post until an ankle injury in the game against Everton on October 25, 2008 only made three appearances in the second half of the season.

For the 2011/12 season Brown moved to AFC Sunderland together with his teammate John O'Shea .

English national team

Brown played his first international match for England's senior team against Hungary on April 28, 1999 and was part of the squad for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea three years later . Four years later, in the run-up to the subsequent World Cup tournament in Germany, he was again in the extended circle of the "Three Lions", but was then left out when Sven-Göran Eriksson was nominated.

It was only under the new coach Steve McClaren that he was taken into account again, where he formed the central defense with John Terry in place of his injured teammate Rio Ferdinand in the European Championship qualifier against Andorra (5-0) . After failing to qualify for Euro 2008 , Fabio Capello also called him to the team; he played his first two games in the spring of 2008 against Switzerland and France . Even after the serious ankle injury in October 2008, Brown remained in Capello's field of vision and in November 2009 he was back in the English team against Brazil (0-1).

Following the 2010 World Cup in South Africa , for which Brown was not considered, he announced his resignation in August 2010.
