Ashkan Dejagah ( Persian اشکان دژآگه, DMG Aškān Dežāgah ; * July 5, 1986 in Tehran ) is an Iranian football player who also has German citizenship . The offensive player is currently under contract with the Iranian first division club Tractor Sazi Tabriz . He has been the captain of the Iranian national soccer team since 2016 .

Club career

Youth and amateur

Dejagah began playing football with the Reinickendorfer Füchsen and Tennis Borussia Berlin . In 2000 he moved to Hertha BSC and went through the youth teams. Since 2003 he has been in the Hertha amateurs squad .

professional

Hertha BSC

At the age of 18 he was accepted into the professional squad of the capital's club, on matchday 1 of the 2004/05 season he made his debut in Germany's top division. On August 7, 2004, Hertha's then coach Falko Götz replaced him in the 85th minute of the game against VfL Bochum . In the first two years Dejagah came to a total of four appearances in the first team. In 2006/07 Dejagah had his breakthrough at Hertha. Behind Marko Pantelić and Christian Giménez he became striker number 3 and was used regularly from the 10th match day. On matchday 14, he scored his first league goal in a 2-1 win over Alemannia Aachen .

VfL Wolfsburg

For the 2007/08 season Dejagah moved to VfL Wolfsburg on a free transfer . There coach Felix Magath made him a regular player; Dejagah had his best haul of goals to date with eight goals in one year. He was the Wolfsburg's top scorer behind Edin Džeko and Grafite . With 5th place at the end of the season, the best result in the club's history was achieved. In the following season Dejagah became German champions for the first time with the team. Despite suffering from hepatitis in the meantime , he was firmly established in the attacking midfield with 27 missions. However, after his break he was rarely in the starting line-up; this continued in the 2009/10 season: in his 24 missions he only played twice over the full 90 minutes.

In the following year he was initially only left with the joker role, in his third assignment from the start he was sent off with a red card. Nevertheless, he started the second half of the season as a regular. It was only when the club reacted by changing coaches after persistent failure that Dejagah was relegated to the bench. In the last four games of the season he returned to the team and contributed to relegation with two goals and one assist.

Fulham FC

On August 31, 2012 Dejagah moved to the Premier League for Fulham FC . He signed a three-year contract with the club from London until June 30, 2015 with the option of one more season.

Al-Arabi Sports Club

After the relegation of Fulham FC, Dejagah moved to Al-Arabi in Qatar in the summer of 2014 .

Return to VfL Wolfsburg

On January 30, 2017, he moved back to VfL Wolfsburg, where he received a contract until the end of the 2016/17 season . Then he left the club.

Nottingham Forest

On January 31, 2018 Dejagah moved to the English second division Nottingham Forest and signed a contract valid until the end of the season. After playing just one game, he moved to Iran.

National team

Germany

Ashkan Dejagah was invited to the German junior national team for the first time at the age of 16. He played for different age groups and was a regular for the U-21 national team . He had his greatest international success at the U-21 European Championship in Sweden in 2009 under national coach Horst Hrubesch . There he usually played as the only striker and was replaced by Sandro Wagner in the final .

Controversy over international match in Israel

There were critical reactions in October 2007 when Dejagah canceled his participation in an international match of the German U-21 national team in Israel for reasons of “very personal nature”. Since the Islamic Revolution in 1979, Iranian athletes have been banned by law from competing against Israeli teams; Iran makes the entry of its citizens into Israel a criminal offense. Dejagah, who has dual citizenship (German and Iranian), feared negative consequences for his parents and relatives living in Iran. In the Bild newspaper, however, he was quoted as saying that his rejection was "political" in nature. Thereupon the Central Council of Jews in Germany, under its then chairwoman Charlotte Knobloch, called for an exclusion from the national team because of the “private boycott of Jews”. CDU politician Ronald Pofalla also called for Dejagah to be excluded from the German national team.

After a clarifying discussion with the then DFB President Theo Zwanziger , the DFB decided that Dejagah could continue to play for the U-21 national team, as he had credibly assured that his motives had no racist or anti-Semitic background. It is "natural that Ashkan Dejagah will be available for the U-21 national team's second leg against Israel if they are nominated." However, Dejagah stayed away from this game due to a "calf injury".

Iran

The Iranian national coach Afschin Ghotbi traveled to Wolfsburg at the end of 2010 to persuade Dejagah to participate in the 2011 Asian Cup . Dejagah rejected the advertising so as not to miss the preparation for the second half of the season at VfL Wolfsburg. The Iranian association accused the club of putting pressure on the player. In the following months Dejagah was invited again and again, but he canceled each time due to injuries or problems with the visa.

In February 2012 Dejagah finally decided on a career in the Iranian national team . In Tehran , he made his World Cup qualifying debut against Qatar under coach Carlos Queiroz on February 29 and scored his first international goal in the fourth minute of the game. After the interim equalization, he also scored the 2-1 lead in the 50th minute (final score 2: 2).

On May 7, 2014 Dejagah was nominated for the provisional squad of the national team for the 2014 World Cup . He was later appointed to the final World Cup squad. He was also appointed to the Iranian squad at the 2018 World Cup , but was not used. Iran was eliminated in third place in the group stage.
