The Cluj Arena is a football stadium in the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca . It is the home ground of the Universitatea Cluj football club . There are currently 30,335 seats (including 1,464 VIP or business seats, 168 press seats and 32 wheelchair-accessible seats).
history
The Cluj Arena in Cluj-Napoca was built from 2009 to 2011 and replaced the old Stadionul Ion Moina , which was the home of Universitatea Cluj from 1919 to 2008 and lasted 28,000 spectators, but no longer met the requirements of a modern stadium. The demolition of the old stadium began on November 20, 2008, and the Ion Moina Stadium was demolished in the spring of the following year. A little later the construction of the new Cluj Arena began, on July 16, 2009 construction work began. This lasted two years, so that the new stadium was opened on October 8, 2011. During the construction period, the team from Universitatea Cluj moved to various other stadiums, including the Stadionul Clujana, where they played in the second division season 2009/10 and the Stadionul Victoria-Cetate in Alba Iulia , where League 1 games took place in 2010/11 . At the beginning of the new first division season 2011/12 Universitatea Cluj used the Stadionul Gaz Metan in Mediaş for the first four home games.
The venue was opened on October 1st, 2011. Concerts by the music groups Scorpions and Smokie and a friendly match against the Russian club FK Kuban Krasnodar took place as part of the opening ceremony . The game on October 16, 2011 against FC Brașov was the first league game in the Cluj Arena.
The Cluj Arena has a capacity of 30,335 spectators. This makes it slightly larger than the previous stadium, where the arena was built. Behind the Arena Națională in Bucharest , the Dan Păltinişanu Stadium in Timişoara and the Iftimie Ilisei Stadium in Medgidia, the fourth largest stadium in Romania and also in Cluj-Napoca, where the Dr. Constantin Rădulescu Stadium by CFR Cluj , which holds 23,500 onlookers, is noteworthy.
The name of the new stadium in Cluj-Napoca had not been finally clarified for a long time. While initially the name Ion Moina Stadium was planned again , the majority of supporters of Universitatea Cluj supported the name Mircea Luca Stadium after a former player of the club. However, the name Cluj Arena was chosen , with the intention of selling the stadium's naming rights to a company.

Music events
In addition to sporting events, the Cluj Arena is also used for cultural purposes such as concerts. For example, the stadium was opened on October 8, 2011 with a music concert by the German rock band Scorpions . Romanian music groups such as Grigore Leşe , Pacifica, Semnal M and Voltaj appeared as opening groups .
Another organized music concert was held on October 9, 2011, with the British rock band Smokie selected for the main performance. The opening acts of this event included names like Loredana, Smiley, Horia Brenciu and Pasărea Colibri . The next event followed the following year, on July 19, 2012, when the Swedish music group Roxette made an official performance in the Cluj Arena.
Two more concerts will take place in June 2013 for the “Cluj Arena Music Fest”. On June 7th, the British rock band Deep Purple will perform live on the stage of the Cluj Arena. At the opening of this concert, Romanian music groups such as Mircea Baniciu , Holograf, Bere Gratis and Proconsul will perform again. Immediately afterwards, on June 8th, the British music group UB40 is expected. Romanian musicians such as Smiley or Ștefan Bănică Jr. will perform under their opening acts .
