In 2011, after a decade-long break, the competition was renamed Superclássico das Américas , Spanish Superclásico de las Américas , or alternatively Copa Dr. Nicolas Leoz , revived. history

Julio Argentino Roca as President

The competition was launched in 1913 by the then Argentine ambassador to Brazil and former president of the country Julio Argentino Roca , who also gave it its name. The cup should be played alternately in Brazil and Argentina .

Julio Argentino Roca donated the trophy to the Federación Argentina de Football (FAF), and it was agreed that the competition would be played for three consecutive years. The country with two wins should keep the cup. Brazil won the first edition with a 1-0 victory on September 27, 1914 in Buenos Aires . In 1915, however, the FAF merged with the AAF, the Asociación Argentina de Football , and the planned following games were no longer played.

The next Copa Roca didn't take place until 1922. This time Brazil won 2-1 in São Paulo on October 22nd and was therefore able to keep the trophy despite the 2-0 victory by Argentina in December 1923.

In 1938, both football associations decided to organize the competition again. The changed rules provided for a tournament in which the winner was to be determined in 2 games. In the event of a tie or two draws, a playoff was scheduled. On January 15, 1939 Argentina won their first encounter in Rio de Janeiro with 5-1. The following game was very turbulent and with many incidents. After the referee awarded Brazil a penalty when the score was 2-2, the Argentine team left the field in protest. The Brazilian team then scored the third goal after the Argentines had already left the field and won the game 3-2.

The playoff was supposed to take place in January 1939, but was postponed to February 1940 due to the incidents. On February 18, 1940, the two teams separated 2-2 in São Paulo, and so a fourth game had to be played. Argentina won it 3-0 on February 25, 1940 and was the tournament winner.

The tournament planned for 1940 in Argentina took place immediately afterwards. The first game on March 5 in Buenos Aires was won by the Argentine national team 6-1. Brazil won the following game 3-2 before Argentina won the tournament on March 17th with a 5-1 win.

Brazil won all of the following tournaments, with the exception of 1971. After a 1-1 on July 28 and a 2-2 on July 31, Brazil and Argentina shared the title this year. The first game in 1957 in the Maracanã of Rio deserves a footnote : it was here that the young Pelé made his debut for the Brazilian national team.

In 2011 the historic tournament was renamed Superclássico das Américas (Spanish Superclásico de las Américas ), alternatively Copa Dr. Nicolas Leoz , revived. The players must be active in the leagues of Argentina and Brazil, as the games do not take place on days reserved by FIFA for international matches. For the first time, the games no longer took place in traditional metropolises. In the two games in Cordoba and Belém , Brazil won the first comparison under the new nomenclature.

There were two special features in 2014: the meeting took place in Beijing in the People's Republic of China for promotional reasons , and players from the European leagues were also able to compete due to a FIFA international break . The event on June 9, 2017 in Melbourne , Australia , also fell during an international break. The following game in 2018 took place in Jeddah , Saudi Arabia . Players who were not active in Brazil or Argentina were again allowed to take part in this game.
