history
In 1876, the city was founded as a colony in the Chaco National Territory, which was barely inhabited at the time. Despite attacks by the Indians, shortly afterwards mainly Italian, German and Polish settlers settled here. In 1885 Resistencia was named the capital of the Chaco. But it was not until 1914 that a constant phase of growth began with the arrival of numerous immigrants from Europe, so that the city has a modern image.
religion
Resistencia is the seat of a Roman Catholic archdiocese with the suffragan dioceses Formosa and San Roque de Presidencia Roque Sáenz Peña . Pope Benedict XVI appointed the new archbishop . on November 17, 2005, Fabriciano Sigampa , who had previously been Bishop of La Rioja .
Economy and Infrastructure
The city is important both as an industrial and commercial center and as an administrative metropolis. The port of Barranqueras is only of importance for river navigation at this point because the Paraná is not suitable for high seas. The Resistencia airport offers national flights.
Apart from Buenos Aires, Resistencia is the only city in Argentina that has a system of suburban trains. These are operated by the company SEFECHA, which is dependent on the province of Chaco .
Culture
In the second half of the 20th century, the installation of sculptures by well-known artists in the city area was promoted, so that the city today almost looks like an open-air museum and is nicknamed Ciudad de las Esculturas . The handicrafts produced by a cooperative in the so-called Barrio Toba , a district inhabited by Toba Indians , are also important.
