Victor Leandro Bagy (called Victor ; born January 21, 1983 in Santo Anastácio , SP ) is a Brazilian football goalkeeper . Since 2012 he has been in the squad of the Brazilian first division club Atlético Mineiro ; in 2009 he was called up to the Brazilian national team for the first time .

Club career

The time at Paulista FC

After having been active in the Paulista FC youth team for several years , Victor was accepted into the club's professional squad for the first time in 2003 at the age of 20. There he found it difficult to find his way into the team at the beginning and spent most of the time on the bench as a substitute goalkeeper. It was only under the coach Vágner Mancini that the late-career man finally found his way into the team from 2004 and 2005. He won in the last year with the Paulista FC and the Copa do Brasil , the Brazilian Cup, as one in the final Fluminense 2: 0 defeated and thus the Cup victory secured for the first time in club history. However, his breakthrough came in 2006, after Mancini's departure as head coach, where he came regularly to his assignments, but still did not really make it to the goalkeeper position. With the team he played until the end of the season for promotion from the Série B to the Série A , but at the end of the season just failed to qualify for promotion. After remaining in the Brazilian second division, Victor became number one in the goal of the professional team from the state of São Paulo . He and the team could no longer match the successes of the previous year and rose with the team at the end of the season on the 17th of 20 places in the third-highest soccer league in Brazil .

Successful move to Grêmio

But before the relegation to the third division, Victor received an offer from the successful Brazilian first division club Gremio Porto Alegre , who wanted to sign him immediately. After his successful signing of the contract, he played a few games in the Campeonato Gaúcho , the national championship of Rio Grande do Sul , where, however, on February 21, 2008 in a 2-1 win over the Clube Esportivo de Bento Gonçalves after around 30 minutes of playing time Ribs injured, which in turn resulted in kidney damage. After he then let Marcelo Grohe go first, he returned to the team punctually at the beginning of the 2008 season and started the 2008 season as number one. Although the team only made it to the quarter-finals at the state championship, they reached the A series with three points behind the FC São Paulo the second place in the table, with Victor was used in all 38 league games. Because of his achievements, he was named the best goalkeeper in the league after the season and made it into the selection of the year 2008. Due to this good placement in the final ranking, the team took part in the Copa Libertadores 2009 , where they made it into Made it to the semi-finals , but was eliminated from the current competition against Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte with a total score of 3: 5. In the twelve games played by the team, Victor played ten games.

In addition to numerous appearances in the state championship of Rio Grande do Sul, in which he did not make it with the team beyond the play-offs and was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the play-offs against the big playing SC Internacional , Victor was also in the 2009 season as Regular goalkeeper used by Gremio. At times he even acted as captain of the team and was used with the team in 28 of the 38 possible league games. This number is mainly due to the fact that Victor received his first call-up to the squad of the Brazilian senior team in 2009 , so he spent part of the season in the national team (including the Confederations Cup 2009 ) and so with the younger goalkeepers at Gremio Had to give way. Victors were also called up to the national squad in the same year. Already in the summer some international clubs, including AS Bari (Italy) and Benfica Lisbon , contacted Grêmio because they had been interested in the goalkeeper for a long time and wanted to sign him during the summer transfer period, although Victor decided to join his home club continue to be faithful. After he only made it to eighth place in the league with the team, he was again awarded the Prêmio Craque do Brasileirão for his merits throughout the year , which he was the best goalkeeper of the A series, which also included him in the selection of the year brought, received. He was also named the best goalkeeper in the Rio Grande do Sul national championship that year, and at the end of the year he also received the Bola de Prata in his goalkeeping position .

2010 was also a very successful year for Victor personally. At the beginning of May he won the national championship of Rio Grande do Sul with Gremio for the 36th time in the club's history, where he was used in 21 games and was awarded the title of best goalkeeper at the end of the tournament. In the league, Victor was able to prevail again as a regular goalkeeper, where he made a total of 35 league appearances and ranked fourth with the team in the final standings. Although he had already qualified with the team via the national championship for the group stage of the Copa Libertadores 2011 , he would have qualified for this with fourth place in the league. At the beginning of July 2010, he extended his expiring contract with Grêmio for another five years until summer 2015.

National team career

Victor received his first call-up to the Brazilian national squad on May 21, 2009, when he was brought into the national team by head coach Dunga for qualifying for the 2010 World Cup and for the 2009 Confederations Cup . In the qualifying matches against Uruguay and Paraguay in June 2010, Victor was in the national team of his home country for the first time. At the Confederations Cup in South Africa in 2009 , he was finally appointed to the Brazilian squad together with goalkeepers Heurelho and Júlio César , but could not prevail against Júlio César, who played for Inter Milan , who was used in all five games in Brazil. In the end, Brazil won the tournament after beating the US national team 3-2 in the final. Before the 2010 World Cup , he was even on Dunga's wish list for a short time, but he did not take him to the World Cup finals in South Africa because he relied on goalkeepers who have experience with European football and are also involved with European clubs. However, since Victor was only active in Brazil, he was eliminated from a possible Brazilian squad at the 2010 World Cup.

It was only when he was called up to join the Brazilian squad for the twelfth time by coach Mano Menezes , who was newly hired after the disappointing World Cup , that he made his international debut in a friendly against the United States on August 10, 2010, with André Felipe Ribeiro de Souza , David Luiz , Honorato Campos Ederson , Jucilei da Silva , Neymar , Paulo Henrique Chagas de Lima was one of seven players who made their debut for Brazil that evening. Further appearances against the Ukraine (2-0) and Argentina (1-0) followed for him in the 2010 game year, which he ended with a total of three appearances in the Brazilian national team. In the summer of 2011, Victor was then appointed to the squad for the Copa América in Argentina, but remained there together with Jefferson behind the goalkeeper Júlio César until the early retirement from the tournament.
