Franco Matías Di Santo (born April 7, 1989 in Mendoza ) is an Argentine football player . He is under contract with Atlético Mineiro .

Career

societies

Beginnings

Di Santo began his football career in the Escuela de Futbol EFAGO. This was followed by a stopover at Godoy Cruz in 2005, but he only stayed there for a year and then moved to Audax Italiano in Chile . There he scored 16 goals in 69 games.

Di Santo in England

On January 25, 2008 he signed a four-year contract with the English club Chelsea . He first played in the reserve team. From the 2008/09 season he was a member of the first team. In 2009 he moved to Blackburn Rovers on loan until February 2010 . His loan deal was extended until the end of the 2009/10 season. He was mainly used as a substitute. On August 31, 2010 moved shortly before the end of the transfer period for the next three years to Wigan Athletic . After he announced at the beginning of the second half of the 2012/13 season not to extend his expiring contract, he was only used irregularly.

Via Bremen to FC Schalke 04

For the 2013/14 season he was signed by the German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen , who provided him with a contract valid until June 30, 2016. After scoring 13 goals in 26 league games for Werder in the 2014/15 season , he moved to FC Schalke 04 for the fixed transfer fee of 6 million euros and received a contract valid until summer 2019. In his first three seasons for Schalke he scored twelve goals in 83 competitive appearances in the Bundesliga, the DFB Cup and the Europa League.

In the 2018/19 season , he caused a scandal on the 4th match day during the 0-2 home defeat against FC Bayern Munich : After his substitution in the 65th minute, the angry Di Santo fought a lengthy battle of words with coach Domenico Tedesco . Di Santo gestured wildly and showed a seven with his fingers, which was interpreted by the media in such a way that he wanted to tell Tedesco that he should have taken his team-mate Mark Uth , who wears the shirt number seven at Schalke, out of the game. In an interview, Di Santo said that he had indicated that at the time of his substitution, he had not even played 70 minutes. In addition, Tedesco is said to have shouted the words "Shut up" to his player during the battle of words, as could be seen on TV recordings. Tedesco did not contradict this representation in an interview with Boris Büchler in the current sport studio . Some of the media saw it critically that Di Santo messed with Tedesco, of all people, who was considered his sponsor. Tedesco then criticized Di Santo in an interview with the current sport studio, among other things with the words “We know that Franco does not have an easy position here. Yet we see something in him. We talk to him strongly - and then that's disappointing. A good upbringing wouldn't be so wrong. ”Di Santo then apologized publicly for his behavior and explained this with his hot blood and his competitive spirit and stated that he had to have a better grip on himself in such moments. He was grateful for Tedesco's support. Di Santo also apologized to the team. The Argentine then made two more appearances in the league until the end of the first half of the season. At the beginning of the preparation for the second half of the season he was eliminated from the professional squad.

Rayo Vallecano

On the last day of the 2019 winter transfer period, Di Santo moved to the Spanish Primera División to Rayo Vallecano . He received a contract until the end of the 2018/19 season . By the end of the season he made 6 league appearances (once from the start) in which he scored a goal. After relegation to the Segunda División , Di Santo left the club with the end of his contract.

Atlético Mineiro

In August 2019, it was announced that Di Santo had signed a contract with the Brazilian club Atlético Mineiro .

San Lorenzo de Almagro

In July 2020, the return of di Santo to his homeland became known. He signed a new contract with Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro .

National team

Franco Di Santo played in the Argentine U-20 national team from 2006 to 2009. With the team he took part in the U-20 South American Championship in 2007 . He was also nominated for the South American Championship in 2009, but was not released from Chelsea because many players were injured there at the time.

In the senior team , he was first used on November 14, 2012 in the second half of the friendly match in Saudi Arabia. He then had short assignments, on February 6, 2013 in the friendly match in Sweden and on March 26, 2013 in the World Cup qualifier in Bolivia. On May 13, 2014 he was appointed by coach Alejandro Sabella in Argentina's provisional 30-member World Cup squad, but not nominated for the tournament.
