Boris Büchler

Boris Büchler (born August 8, 1969 in Hachenburg ) is a German sports reporter and filmmaker .

Life

After graduating from high school, Büchler studied sports science with a focus on "sports journalism" at the German Sport University in Cologne . After completing his studies, he was a lecturer there, responsible for the “TV sports reporting ” seminar .

His journalistic career began in 1993 as an editor at WDR in Düsseldorf and Cologne, where he worked for the television programs Current Hour and “Sport im Westen”. In 1996 he switched to the sports department of ZDF . Since then he has worked there as an editor, reporter, live interviewer and filmmaker. Büchler comments on games of the Bundesliga and DFB Cup in the current sports studio , shoots documentaries (including "WM-Fieber 2006", "Oliver Kahn Documentation 2008"), reports and is a constant companion of the German national soccer team for ZDF , which he reported on at world championships (1998, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014) and European championships (2000, 2004, 2008 and 2016). As a story maker and commentator he was a. a. at the 1998 Olympic Games in Nagano (Japan), Sydney (Australia) in 2000 and Athens (Greece) in 2004.

In the Süddeutsche Zeitung, on the occasion of the European Football Championship in 2008 , Büchler was described as a “basement child” who, in contrast to the faces present, was knowledgeable and thus won the respect of the footballers interviewed.

Shortly after the German team's round of 16 at the 2014 World Cup , Per Mertesacker reacted angrily to the criticism of the team's performance expressed by reporter Boris Büchler. This led to a strong echo in the press and social networks, the interview was sometimes parodied. His reporting was examined in the context of Thomas Horky's scientific work "The Football World Cup as a Communication Topic". Büchler has lived in Mainz since 2005 ; before that he lived in Cologne for 10 years .
