Academy for Social Maria Stern Nördlingen the school work of the Diocese of Augsburg is a private, state-approved, vocational training center for educators and teachers. Since 1975, it has been sponsored by the diocese of Augsburg , which was brought into being by Bishop Josef Stimpfle . The school was founded by the Star Sisters (Franciscan Sisters from Augsburg), who have been educating and educating young people in Nördlingen since 1868. It can look back on more than 100 years of tradition and is therefore one of the oldest confessionally bound specialist academies for social education in Bavaria.

Beginnings of the Stern Sisters

At the request of pastor Michael Wildegger to improve education for girls, Superior General M. Salesia Ellersdorfer sent four sisters to Nördlingen in 1868: one was a teacher, a kindergarten teacher, a handicraft teacher and the superior taught music and French. The school quickly became very popular.

Historical development and present

On May 7, 1906, the Royal. Government of Swabia and Neuburg opened a seminar for kindergarten teachers in Nördlingen under the auspices of the Franciscan Sisters of Maria Stern , a religious order that was founded in Augsburg in 1258 . The then Oberlin of the Nördlingen branch monastery, Sr. Gervasia Kächelein, recognized the need for a training center, especially since there was a great demand for well-trained kindergarten teachers in the "numerous branches of the Maria Stern monastery community with its affiliated child care institutions".

Kindergarten teachers for families should be trained in a ten-month course and kindergarten teachers as leaders of kindergartens in a two-year course. Furthermore, nannies and after-school care workers were prepared for their jobs. The kindergarten teacher training was divided into the following subjects:

Education, child psychology, kindergarten teaching, instructions for setting up, managing and managing kindergartens, health education and school hygiene, youth and folk literature, natural history, civics and economics, housekeeping and gardening, gymnastics, movement games and youth games for the older children, occupational lessons, modeling, Drawing, needlework, practical instructions, exercises and teaching samples in kindergarten, singing, voice training and lecture exercises, ironing, electives: foreign languages, piano and violin playing and shorthand. Learning an instrument is a compulsory subject for the kindergarten director .

The seminar not only trained the monastery's own offspring, it was also open to secular applicants, especially since there was a lack of trained staff in the public Catholic education for small children (this included detention centers, schools for small children and kindergartens that worked according to Froebel's method). Pastor Alois Wagner wrote in 1910: “The institution in Nördlingen spreads great blessings. Every year since 1906, when the kindergarten teacher seminar was opened, she has released half a hundred schoolgirls who are called to sink Christian thoughts and feelings into the tender hearts of children ”.

In 1928, kindergarten teacher training was combined with training as a day care worker in a two-year course. In the following, the training center for kindergarten teachers and after-school care workers was called Maria Stern Nördlingen .

During the Nazi dictatorship , the monastic seminary was particularly exposed to the mistrust of the state apparatus. The teaching nuns were repeatedly checked for their loyalty to the state.

On February 11, 1941, the Bavarian State Ministry for Education and Culture decreed :

The denominational socio-pedagogical seminars are to be transferred to a public, corporate school sponsor in the course of this year ... The leaders ... must be informed that new admissions may no longer take place at the beginning of the 1941/42 school year.

An attempt to object by the headmistress, Sr. M. Xaveria Kiechle, was unsuccessful; the seminar had to close its doors at the end of the school year 1941/42 after 35 years of activity. At the same time the seminar kindergarten was closed and the school building was converted into a hospital.

After the end of the war, the Maria Stern Nördlingen monastery submitted an application to the military government of Frankfurt to reopen the Maria Stern Nördlingen seminar for kindergarten teachers . Already on November 17, 1945, the required approval for the reopening of the seminary for kindergarden teachers came . Nine days later, training in the seminar was officially resumed with 13 students. In 1946 a second seminar kindergarten was added and a seminar daycare center was opened in 1950. The training center, which was converted into a technical college for social pedagogy in 1968 and into a specialist academy for social pedagogy in 1973 , quickly gained a good reputation far beyond the borders of the city and the local region. The growing number of applicants led to a permanent lack of space, which was resolved in 1986 with the construction of a new comprehensive monastic education center, which today includes the specialist academy for social pedagogy , a secondary school, a crèche, a kindergarten and a day-care center.

Around the year 2000 the Schulwerk of the Diocese of Augsburg intended to unite the training center with the Dillingen Academy for Social Pedagogy and to relocate it to the Maria Medingen monastery , since the monastic secondary school was closed there. But through the vigorous intervention of the then Lord Mayor of Nördlingen "with the then understanding finance director of the Diocese of Augsburg , Prelate Eugen Kleindienst , the danger was averted".

In 2001, the two- tier specialist academy for social education in Maria Stern Nördlingen was given a secular tour for the first time. At the end of the school year, the sisters of the Maria Stern Nördlingen monastery were ceremoniously bid farewell to the specialist academy. In the same year, the previous one-year pre-study internship was converted into a two-year social pedagogical seminar , which ends with the job title of a state-certified nanny .

The educational institution participates in the European educational program Leonardo da Vinci , which enables it to enable around 30 students to work abroad in Austria, Ireland, England or Spain every year. In addition, there are contacts between students at the Fachakademie and students at the Catholic University of Eichstätt-Ingolstadt .

If the prescribed admission requirements are met (see: Fachakademie für Sozialpädagogik ), the Fachakademie für Sozialpädagogik Maria Stern Nördlingen is open to all applicants, regardless of their religious affiliation.

In 2009 the educational institution was awarded the Rieser Kulturpreis . In its annual reports, the Maria Stern Academy for Social Pedagogy in Nördlingen addresses the large number of its educational offers and reveals the opportunity for additional qualifications such as an internship in a retirement home or biography work in cooperation with the Nördlingen City Archives.

From the school year 2009/2010 the trainer license “Trainer C - Popular Sports Children / Young People” can be acquired. This was followed by a cooperation with the Antonio Rosetti Music School and the Wallerstein Kindergarten for early musical education.

With the 2012/2013 school year, the “external exam” (target group: high school graduates) for the professional qualification “state-certified nanny” was introduced as part of a one-year socio-educational internship.

Since the 2014/2015 school year, the additional qualification “Professional competence in the school social space” has been offered. In addition, in view of the Franciscan roots, a statue of Francis (design: Sr. Nicole Oblinger, OSF) was placed in the entrance of the specialist academy on March 21, 2014.

In the 2015/2016 school year, due to the sustained high number of applicants, the extension to the three-movement option took place.

On May 6th and 7th, 2016, the Maria Stern Academy celebrated its 110th anniversary, which was ushered in with an ecumenical service in St. Salvator and a ceremony with invited guests and the students of the training facility.

Starting with the 2016/2017 school year, the specialist academy will also take part in the “OptiPrax” (model 2) pilot project run by the Bavarian Ministry of Culture, Science, Education and Art as the first specialist academy in Swabia. The aim is to counteract the current lack of educators by allowing applicants with a high school diploma to complete a shortened training program, while at the same time maintaining the high quality of the generalist training. In the 2018/19 school year, the first class of the successful model test completed their training.

As one of four schools of the diocese of Augsburg, sponsoring a total of 40 Catholic schools, the specialist academy takes part in the first run of the pilot project "Stretch your hand out ...". Under the scientific direction of Klaus Zierer (professor for school education at the University of Augsburg), the educational work should be based on the results of the Hattie study on the importance of the teacher-student relationship for learning success. In a further training series for the entire staff over a total of one year, the contents and results of the Hattie study are deepened, applied and reflected in order to enable sustainable quality development.

From autumn 2020, the school will expand its offer to include training as a pedagogical specialist for primary school childcare (first school in Swabia). The prerequisite is an intermediate level of education, completed training and an internship in advance. The training lasts two years: an academic year and a paid internship year.

Mission statement

The guiding principle of the school is based on the basic conviction of a Christian world and human image. In addition to conveying scientifically sound teaching content and promoting specialist and technical skills, the development of the personality of the students is a particular concern of the Catholic educational institution.
