Valdir Peres (born January 2, 1951 in Garça , São Paulo , † July 23, 2017 in Mogi Mirim ; actually Waldir Peres de Arruda ) was a Brazilian football player .

Goalkeeper Valdir Peres was the goalkeeper of São Paulo FC between 1973 and 1984 . During this time he rose to the Brazilian national goalkeeper. At the beginning of his career he was overshadowed by goalkeeping legend Emerson Leão . He was a substitute goalkeeper at the 1974 World Cup in Germany and the 1978 World Cup in Argentina . At the Soccer World Cup in Spain in 1982 he played all games as goalkeeper number one.

Valdir Peres ended his career in 1990 after playing a total of 30 international matches. His son José Diego "Diogo" Pires (* 1981) is also a footballer and plays for the Guarani club.
