Player career

society

Football goalkeeper Émerson Leão, or Leão for short, was one of the best goalkeepers in the world in the 1970s.

He began his professional career in the club in 1968 at Palmeiras São Paulo . He played here until 1978 and returned there in 1984. In the intervening years he played for CR Vasco da Gama , Grêmio Porto Alegre and Corinthians São Paulo . He ended his football career in 1986 with Sport Recife .

National team

His first appearance in the senior national team was at the age of 21 on March 8, 1970 in a friendly against Argentina, which he won 2-1. At the soccer World Cup in Mexico in 1970 he took part as a substitute goalkeeper for the Brazilian national soccer team, where he was able to celebrate the world championship title with Brazil. At the 1974 World Cup in Germany , he was already the goalkeeper and reached fourth place. The game for third place was lost against Poland 0-1. The winning goal for Poland against Leão was scored by the top scorer of this World Cup, Grzegorz Lato . Four years later, Leão was the captain of the Brazilian team at the 1978 World Cup in Argentina and finished third with Brazil. In 1986 he was nominated again as a substitute goalkeeper for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico. He completed a total of 80 full international matches.

Coaching career

1987 Émerson Leão was hired at Sport Recife as a coach, where he immediately won the Brazilian championship in the same year , although the awarding of the title was very controversial that season. In 1988 he left Sport Recife for Coritiba FC to continue his successful national and international coaching career.

As a coach, he looked after the Brazilian national team for four months in 2000/01. Other positions included FC Santos , Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte , FC São Paulo and Atlético Mineiro . Most recently (as of August 2013) he worked in 2012 as a coach for the promotion candidate AD São Caetano in Série B, the second Brazilian division.
