Due to ongoing political tensions, the Italian army command had been preparing for a possible joint attack by both states with a corresponding two-front war in northern Italy for several years , so the formation of the two army groups corresponded to this scenario. After the defeat of France, the Army Group Command East was dissolved on July 10, 1940 and at the same time the Army Group Command West was renamed Gruppo d'Armate a disposizione and then also dissolved on October 31, 1940.

The Army Group Command East was re-established on May 15, 1943 in Tirana and took over the 9th Army , the VI. and the XIV Corps and a division in Albania , Montenegro and southern Dalmatia . Until July 28, 1943, the 11th Army in Greece and the command of the Italian Aegean Islands were also under the command . After the armistice of Cassibile and the partly violent disarmament of the Italian armed forces ( Axis case ), the Army Group Command was officially dissolved on September 11, 1943.
