Gruppo d'Armate Sud

Gruppo d'Armate Sud ( German  Army Group South ) was the name of an Italian army group in World War II . It existed in 1940 and then from 1942 to 1943 in central and southern Italy.

The Army Group Command South was set up on June 8, 1940 in Rome and took over the 3rd Army in continental southern Italy and the XII. Corps in Sicily , the XIII. Corps in Sardinia , the XXVI Corps in Albania and smaller units. After the end of the German campaign in the west and the defeat of France, the Army Group Command was disbanded on July 10, 1940.

The reactivation took place on April 15, 1942. The Army Group Command took over the 5th , 6th and 7th Army in central and southern Italy. On July 10, 1943, the Allies began the invasion of Sicily , which had to be abandoned after 40 days. In Calabria the fighting lasted until the armistice of Cassibile on September 8, 1943. After the disarmament of the Italian armed forces ( Axis case ), the Army Group Command was officially dissolved on September 10, 1943.
