Sessa Aurunca is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 21,036 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Caserta in Campania . The municipality borders the province of Latina . The city is about 40 kilometers northwest of Caserta and about 30 kilometers east of Formia . The Garigliano flows through the area of the municipality at the foot of the extinct volcano Roccamonfina .
The city stands on the remains of the ancient settlement of Suessa Aurunca , which was the main town of the Aurunkians . The old city was a little higher (about 600 meters above sea level) on the crater rim of the volcano. Around 337 BC The settlement was abandoned because the pressure of the Sidicins was too great. 313 BC It was re-founded as a Roman Colonia under the old name, but a little below the crater. From the Augustan period, the settlement was called Colonia Iulia Felix Classica Suessa .
The city has been the seat of the Sessa Aurunca diocese since the Middle Ages .
In more recent times the community was the site of a nuclear power plant .
