Vitulazio is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 7634 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Caserta in Campania . The municipality is located about 13 kilometers northwest of Caserta on the southern slope of Monte Tutuli and is crossed by the Agnena river. The Volturno flows a few kilometers south of the municipal boundary .
history
The area was already populated in Roman antiquity. A vicus Romanus (Roman hamlet ) has existed here since the 3rd century BC. The story is linked to that of the neighboring municipality of Capua ; in the 10th century Vitulacius is called "Casale" (hamlet or homestead ) of Capua. The name of the place, of Latin-medieval origin, was Vitulaccio until 1882 . In 1806 Joseph Bonaparte made it an independent municipality, in 1883 a royal decree by Umberto I changed the name to Vitulazio. Since 1861 the number of inhabitants has increased fivefold.
Attractions
- The parish church of Santa Maria dell'Agnena was built from 1774 to 1803. The furnishings, mostly from the 19th century, also contain high-quality baroque paintings from a previous church that collapsed during the construction of the parish church.
- The large palazzo of the Counts Capece Galeota dates from the first years of the 19th century, once surrounded by an extensive park on the periphery of the village. The Casino di caccia (the hunting villa) of the Bourbons is located on the main avenue of Palazzo Capece Galeota, built roughly at the same time as it .
- Villa Rotondo , surrounded by an Italian garden, dates from the first years of the 20th century . The Liberty building remained intact in the American bombing of World War II and housed the town hall until the 1950s. Then the building was abandoned for a long time, the flood of cement from the new buildings (mostly black buildings) threatened to destroy the park too, until the municipality imposed a construction ban on the villa and park at the last minute in 2005. The villa has been restored and is now (2016) used as a venue for events and weddings.
