The Volturno is a tributary of the Tyrrhenian Sea in central Italy .
River course
It rises in the Molise region near Rocchetta a Volturno . It initially flows about 40 km to the south, then almost 50 km in a south-easterly direction. The Calore Irpino meets the Volturno coming from the east. Shortly afterwards this turns to the west. It reaches the coastal plain, passes the small town of Capua and, after a length of 175 kilometers, flows into the Gulf of Gaeta about 35 kilometers northwest of Naples near Castel Volturno . It flows through the provinces of Isernia , Benevento and Caserta . The Volturno is navigable from Capua. The mean discharge is 82.7 m³ / s. The catchment area of the Volturno above Capua covers 5558 km².
History
On October 1, 1860, the Battle of the Volturno took place on its banks . Even after the overthrow of Mussolini's regime on September 18, 1943, the Volturno was a stage in the withdrawal of the German troops under Albert Kesselring, occupying Italy .
