Castel Morrone is an Italian municipality ( comune ) with 3738 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Caserta in Campania . The municipality is located about 5.5 kilometers north-northeast of Caserta . The north-western boundary of the municipality forms the Volturno .

history

Until the unification of Italy, the community was still called Morrone in Terra di Lavora . Today's namesake of the municipality is the castle ruins above the place on the so-called Monte Castello .

Excavations lead to the conclusion that a Punic fortification was built here under Hannibal around 216 BC.
